Hello All,

New to hunting and had been contemplating trail cams off and on...for some reason I got the bug last week and found some I may pull the trigger on.

Was discussing it with SR80 and he and I both agree it seems like more work than its worth at this point...the time spent going to and from the cams could just as well be spent finding animals with my own eyes.

I may do some 5 days trips in Oct and Nov, so maybe then they could be worth it, if one pulls the cards once a day. Then you know what happened the night before. Assuming you are staying close by and working that area fairly hard. If you decide to leave the area, you'll need to recover the cameras before you do, or later in the year or even spring...

Have to decide today to get the sale prices...

Thoughts?

it's never too late to put them up.
it's not just about trying to locate the spot where they hang out, but to see just what is in that area.
one doesn't have to be checking them daily, I would never do that.
put 'em up.
what can it hurt?

I have heard from a ton of people say that they have elk on their cams all summer then the disappear the second week or August. So by that logic it would make the most sense to have them out in the weeks leading up to the season so you know what's been around recently.

You could always put them out in an area you plan to hunt and then go back during the season so it's only one extra trip. It would be scouting so certainly not wasted!

I have the t-cam bug, having fun with the video mode.

good luck!

tcams are most fun for all the unexpected stuff that gets captured by them.

What sale did you find if you don't mind sharing.

There's never a bad time to have cams up. That said, footage taken a few weeks before your hunt is golden intel. Go for it! If you will get out to the same spot twice over the season, leave it in the bush and check it on your next hunt.

I have never shot an animal yet that I have seen on my trail cameras. But I have put trail cameras up in areas that looked good to me only to find next to nothing on the cameras. So I knew those areas were not going to produce well. Whenever I do have a lot of activity on a camera, I tend to hunt that area more and it has been productive.

That's all it took...doesn't take much to push a guy over the edge of spending more money on hunting. ;-)

But makes sense, get them out where I plan to hunt and check on them from time to time to ensure I am in the right area before the 5 day trips. I am down in the city, but have a spot in 3-19 that we will be going to for a few more weekend trips yet. So I can get them out next trip, check them one after and then again on the hunting trips.

Going with this one:

And if you spend $250 you get $50 off. Doesn't quite get me to $250 for 3 so I'll I add something as close to the $10.03 needed to bump me over. I pick things up in Blaine and even if I have to pay the taxes these still seem like a pretty good deal at $67 a piece give or take.

Thanks for you time guys.

Right now I use my imagination for what I am missing. Oddly it comes up with things far more frustrating than the trail cam pics you posted. So maybe these will actually help me sleep at night. Cause this spring I assumed I just missed finding 1278 bears (give or take) in the area I was hunting and I was a bad bad hunter.

A dose of reality may calm my imagination.

That's it, I am getting a dozen!

What about next year and the year after?? Put them out and have fun, you just never know.

I put out 2 in Oct last year for deer an they had deer on the salt in 2 days. Got over 500 Picts in the first week.

Never too late.

Your link does not work. What cameras are they?? Be careful of buying them from the states, duty, taxes and a PITA warranty if you have to ship them back to GM.

Cheers

Try this link http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Spypoint-G4-Game-Camera&i=443105

I have been fortunate crossing the border to not get dinged too often. So the taxes and duty I am not overly concerned with. Likewise with returns, I am down in Blaine about every 10 days or so. So far so good with my US purchases. If one was to go south, I'd still be ahead in the long run.

And yes, you are right. The cost should be amortized over the next 3-6 years not just this one.

Sounds like EK and R8 elk hunters.

The spot you want your cams isn't where the elk are in july and august, you want to be where the elk are in september and october after the pressure hits. Then you will consistently kill elk.

Same applies to mulw deer and white-tailed deer in areas with pressure.

Just because they aren't showing up on cam doesn't mean they aren't around either. I wasn't getting many pics in one area so I put another one not even 100 yards away and there they all were. Trail cams are lots of fun.
