About the closest we'll get to handgun hunting for now....

Finally picked up a Ranch Hand. Mostly for my clients to use, but I'll hunt with it too. :)

45 Colt
300GR Hornady XTP Hollowpoint
It clocks out of my 16" barrel Trapper at 1600fps, I'm guessing this is making about 1450-1500fps out of the shorter barrel.

The group is at 25 yards. I shot some gongs at 50, too. Should be fun to hunt with. I've been eyeballing a big black bear recently. :)

That loop big enough for your mitt? I have been thinking about one myself.

I would prefer a smaller loop actually. Dont' know if I will order a new one, modify this one or just leave it be. :)

What's the over all length. I've been thinking about getting one for dirt biking with my kids.

Well, that'll be handy stuffed down yer trousers. You going to get some .45 colt shotshells for short range ditch chickens?

Gateholio
08-31-2014, 02:33 PM
I think overall it's 24"

I've got some gas checks and #8 shot. I might make some shot shells but at the range they have a useful pattern, a stick probably works fine too. :)

I have mine for a couple of years now (.44 mag) and am still waiting for the right black bear situation.

I figure that if I unload the magazine on him and he's still coming, it will make a pretty nice club to beat him with.

Now all you need is a ranch to complete the circuit.
I met one guy who hunts with .444 Marlin, something short like that. He took a bear with it.

The Ranch Hand/Mares Leg was definitely from Hollywood. No real cowboy in his right mind would pick one instead of a revolver or full size rifle.

Yep. Been thinking of getting one myself for a while. Be nice to pack something like that shed hunting or just out hiking and scouting in summer.

It's a shorty gun. Only holds 6

That thing looks incredibly uncomfortable to shoot. Doesn't seem very practical unless you're going to rob a bank.

You would be foolish to try to rob a bank or get into a shoot out with a Ranch Hand. Only 6 shots, slow to load, slow to aim and shoot accurately.

A friend has one. He put a regular stock on it and its much better to shoot.

Gateholio

A regular butt stock will make it much easier to shoot and more accurate, but is pretty redundant for me. I've already got a short carbine (pictured above) 100 yards is no problem whatsoever for the carbine. Probably very tough with the Ranch Hand. I've never even shot it past 50 yards actually :)

The Ranch Hand is much more of a challenge to use. :)

You make good points and I stand corrected. I guess it's completely impractical. :)

I've had mine (.45 colt as well) for a couple years now. I actually got fairly good shooting it - was hitting a 8" square plate at 100m 8/10 times. I found it helped to clip a single point sling on the saddle ring, then I was pushing out against resistance and was steadier.
Worked up a few hand loads, including a 330gr hard cast wfn that was whistling out at just under 1400 fps. This summer I fitted up a full size stock and it's much more practical now.

Can't seem to find the target right now, but was doing 1.5"-2" offhand at 60 yards.

We have a ton of fun with our. 44 mares leg, got a custom holster for it with my brothers initials embroidered on, he took a bear with it at 5 yards, and he got 3 shotts off, it went 5 yards and toppled over, recovered 3 perfect mushhrooms

Mine is a 45 Colt, Chiappa, made in Italy.
Had it out with me on Sunday, but we didn't see any Sheep.
