Hello Folks,

Just back from a month of dark to dark fishing.
Salmon lived up to the hype around them this year, and so the catches were good.
Happy but Damn BAGGED!

Had an interesting encounter while fishing off Esperanza (WCVI - outside and west a little of Nootka).
A Salmon Shark decided to try on one of the plugs we were using for springs.
Good Sized Bugger, but just a tad on the vicious side! When I eventually did try for the underwater shot, the Bugger SMOKED HARD to try and engulf camera and hand in one bite!! http://fishbcforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/WOW.gif

Needless to say, that is one photo that wasn't captured!!

Little video here:

About 6 feet or just shy in length. Guessed ~ 250 - 300 pounds. Too Damn Big to tangle with!!

Great video and photos! I used to jump off the boat into the ocean at will as a kid until I got stung by a red jellyfish when I was 17. Thanks for posting, I have never seen this shark before in my 49 years. My family will love it!

Good catch Nog!

We had a ten footer up next to the boat a few years ago before cutting him off. They are like mini Great Whites. Had one the same day bite a coho in half. Very cool!

Very cool stuff!! I dove with some six gills in Barkley Sound a bunch of years ago - got within 10 feet of a 12 footer! BIG FISH! My balls were bigger then....

What pound test line are you running?
Good advertisement for some company.

I had to make a leader out of a wire downrigger release clip in order to get one in. They eat through halibut hand line like it's 10 pound test. Up to that day I didn't know we had anything on the coast like them.

For some... perhaps...
Sharks have no kidneys, therefore they excrete uric acid through their musculature, and eventually out through their skin (as opposed to releasing it in urine). I have no intention of eating anything that pisses through it's skin!
Your mileage may vary of course...

Yo Zuri "Hybrid" (nylon & fluorocarbon) Line, 60 pound test. We've been using this stuff on the troller for quite a few years now. It has Incredible Stretch / Elasticity, and is Much Stronger than than the test rating would suggest.
Also works extremely well in sporting applications btw

Targeted on these a few times in past years up out of Hardy during the sockeye / pink runs. They pretty well always show up in numbers on a good year for those fish. Used 220 pound Piano Wire for leaders, and they still managed to chew right through that on occasion. Mean set of choppers alright!
Hardest part of that gig was getting a whole sockeye or pink to attain that Perfect Anchovy Roll.
Fight like Demons! Best be in damn fine shape, or take a boatload of crew to switch you off if you expect to successfully battle one to the boat!

These are one of the only true Warm Blooded sharks in existence. That allows them to range much further North than the vast majority of their toothy kin.

Here's an interesting documentary form Alaskan Waters should any be interested:

Never have seen myself although have hooked into " unlandable" fishes before of immence strengths and to this day always wondered what the heck they were.Would be interesting to see what would show up if a guy did the shark chum thing-if thats legal? dont hear much on this anywhere yet. As noted above, for several years we went over to the inside near Hardy to target on the Salmon Sharks. Tagged (literally tagging them) a few over that time. Damn Tough Buggers, they REALLY put on a show!

Did not have to "chum" (although the odd lad did from time to time :-D) simply slow-rolled whole pinks near the surface.

Unbelievable FIGHT!

Deffinatly looks like could be a blast and after studying them some they look aggressive too. Actually look shaped lil like a bull shark. The large ones would really be a handfull. With the list of sharks we have here would be really suprising to see just "what" could show up-some pretty exciting times there I think! Tight Lines....BULLNUTTS
