Hi,
Well i won a draw this year for bull moose in 5-15 from sept 10-30. We are probably heading up the last week of the window.
Planning to camp near crooked lake on the horsefly river. Any advice and suggestions for that time of year - deer and moose.
Is it worth drifting the river with a little raft? Say from crooked rd turn off down to rec site?

thanks

you cannot drift into Crooked Rec Site, it flows away from the lake. The lower Horsefly would be a better bet as there are waterfalls below Crooked. There is a Rec Site right beside the river, be a great spot to base out of. (Horsefly River Rec Site, www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca

xpeier thats what i meant didnt explain it right. basically drift from the confluence of the horsefly and crooked down to the HF rec site. Any dangers i should worry about? i've got a 12' inflatable kayak and a 16' canoe.

Tough to get a moose into the kayak, I'd expect, but I've done it in a 16' canoe.

Don't know what the Horsefly River is like, but, moose hunting from a canoe can be fun, but be prepared to see a beautiful bull show himself just as you're bumping over a gravel bar. Having done that once and missed the bull I'd be prepared, second time through, to just leave the canoe with my partner and step out into the shallow water. You know what I'm talking about - not where the water is rushing over basketball and bigger size rocks, but on a gravel bar with low fall water levels. Horsefly may have more than enough water, but it happened to me years ago on the Blackwater with two cows and the biggest bull I've ever seen! I was too dense to just take the soaker and get the shot.

yes, there is a set of waterfalls upstream of the Horsefly Rec Site. I would also expect to find that the upper reaches would be narrow and possibly full of sweepers and jams. I would take the canoe along on your hunt, and use it to check out some of the lakes West of Crooked instead.

If you wanted to float the section below the Horsefly Rec site, then that would be more feasible, but then you get into a ton of private property as the river flattens out.

can you tell me more or less where the waterfall is?

DLP, approximately 3.3km upstream of the Horsefly River Rec Site as the river flows, or 2.8km from the Jct of the 100rd and the 500rd (bit of a pull out and a small sign)

We had a draw up there last year, and it was stinkin' hot the whole time. I pushed a lot of bush on foot down through the swampy land and drove a lot of roads. There is a lot of old moose poop, but from sept. 9-28 I saw 2 piles of fresh, and 2 cows. The moose are undoubtedly there, but hope for some cold weather or the buggers will be so deep in the thick, thick bush that you won't have a hope of seeing them.

The real PO was a couple of guys just the other side of the road in 5-02 got 2 in a week in their MU...

Can someone update me a bit here? Heard from a local there arent many moose around in september that they just 'winter' here. Is this BS or am i wasting my time up there next week??
