Inspired by others on this forum I decided to make one thread of my 2014 hunting and scouting which I will up date as the season progresses

2014 started out with a big change, the birth of my first child a beautiful future huntress. Defiantly a game changer but me and the wife both said it won't slow us down much, and our outdoor life must continue. Camping at a month old, swatting Mosquitos on the river bank and walking the dogs every day life has been good to me.

Bow season sept 1-9 any bull is fast approaching practise practise practise. I shoot everyday at 10 yards In my basement practising form and building muscle. I try to get out and do some long range at the mother Inlaws. Once a week She thinks I'm coming to visit but really I just want to shoot my bow. Only a year in I am confident to 30 yards
First target is 30 yard large target at 50yards

broad head at 30( I learned to only shoot one at a time )

I have been checking some close to town swamps but have yet to see even a cow. I did find a set of cow and calf tracks comin down off the mtn headed to one of my areas.

Two bucks well headed out on a dog walk

Spent the weekend up north clearing trail to my sept bow hunt area. I will have 3 full days to hunt this area during the sept 1 bow only season. We seen lots of moose in this area last September Bow hunting but the bulls always seemed to be on the other side of the river. This year we are trying the other side and it is actually a new area to me seperated by the river. Seen lotsa moose pop and tracks, some bear tracks and a set of monster wolf tracks.

So like most of us I debated about keeping the post going but figured what the hell I ain't got anything to lose.

I took the Friday off for the sept bow only season, convinced my dad and bro to do the same and a plan was set in stone. i left the wife and kid at home and we were off Thursday afterwork. But first I figured I needed some extra home security so I but my daughter her first gun. A beauty Remington .00022 magnum with 3 x 40 tasco scope

we made it to our destination with enough time to grab a twisted tea and head to the ridge for a quick scout. The atv ride in took longer then expected but we were able to spot two moose eating in a meadow before sun down. Their was no sheet of plywood on the heads but possibly a spiker. A plan was set to approach that meadow the next morning.

Up a little later then expected but left camp around 6 am. A ninja like atv ride dodging branches on the overgrown trail and we were ready to begin our first day of bow season. Parked the quads and down over the bank, quietly into the first of many meadows and bam. A cow moose around the first bend literally a 100 feet from the quads. Pumped this is what it's about. Where's the bull !!!

of course the sneaky critter new we were their and a standoff began. We waited until she was comfy. My dad raking some trees to seem like a bull. She starts feeding again. And we slowly sneak closer anxiously looking for accompanying bull

No bull with the cow but she actually walked right towards us unspooked and into the meadow beside us. Thinking she was gone we started to move. The damn ice was 15 yards away in the meadow beside is seperated by a small group of trees. She spooked and ran about 20 yards and the slowly walked into the thick stuff eating away.
Wow that was cool and a great start. We're hunting boys.
My dad pumped decides to climb a tree and wait to see if a bull emerges. Me and my bro decide to proceed to the meadow we seen the 2 moose the day before.

After a decent walk and some gps guidance we make it to the Meadow we were looking for. A beauty spot. We spot a home built tree stand and my bro decides he is calling if home for the day. I decide to press on to the next meadow that has a small lake and have seen many moose in, in previous years.
The day becomes hot a the sun burns the cloud cover off. Dammit to hot for anything to be moving

The day goes by no movement siting waiting for the sun to set. It's hot. Cookin. I fell sleep in the shade of an alder bush. I awake. Head pounding face sun burnt chest have burnt from my open button up shirt. The damn sun moved around the tee and burnt the shit outta me. That was stupid. On the first day. The full face mask goes on to protect my face, all of my face paint waren off from the sweat

The sun sets my bro and I talk on the radio and make a meeting point. We begin the walk out and meet at the edge of another meadow, we decide to sit it out and wait a bit. My bro sees movement I don't believe him. I turn around and see a beauty wolf nice full white face and grey back runing threw the meadow. I didn't think they liked the thick brush but their one is. Holy crap I was just sleeping in the other meadow. That's pretty brave.
My bro does a mock predater call it stops and stares. I knock up an arrow. This is awesome!! The wolf is about 50 yards away, the closest I have ever been to a big wolf. It moves into the thick outta sight. My bro grabs a blade of grass to try doin a call. The grass is to dry and dosnt work. We can here the wolf leaving to the meadow I was just in.
no shot. We walk out and meet up with my dad. What a great day it was. I love hunting. That's what's it's all about. We walk out in the dark And make it to the quads and find a business card from a conservation officer.

It has a hand written note " thanks for not driving your atv of the road. Happy hunting!!"
we were wondering why someone drove a atv all the way in just to leave again. ( I should add their is a atv trail going down into the swamp)
Sounds like their cracking down on off road atv use.
Day 1 is over. What a day.

Day 2
we awake as usual nice and early. Porridge and coffee and into the swamp.
Its foggy , A sign that it is most likely going to be sunny later. Theirs something about heavy fog and hunting that turns my crank. It just sets the mood gives it a mysterious look. I love mornings like this.
We practise our stealth walk and slowly separate for the day. As the fog burns off I see my first fog bow. I don't take a pic at its prime but decide later it's pretty cool and snap some photos

The sunny days create a lot of morning dew. I'm soaked from the brush. It makes the spider webs look cool. I wish I took a pic of the whole meadows covered in them

The day goes on it gets hot tell mid day and starts to cloud over. Maybe this will get the moose moving.

some fellow hunters can be herd coming down the valley. Soon enough we here chainsaws and hooting and hollering on the ridge and trail. I try to be as quiet as I can be when in a hunting area but these guys don't seem to care.
At this point me and my bro are exploring and go on an expedition at least a 2 hour walk and set up in some alder brush waiting for movement.
At this point the Quaders decide to go for a hunt i guess. They can be herd for miles driving their quads down into the swamp breaking branches crushing trees. At one point i here laughter as someone rolls their quad. These guys are loud and im sure wrecked any chance of a moose coming out into the open. They stop just shy of us. Jump off their quads bows in hand and head straight for us. I can see smiles they seem to think after all the racket they made they still have a chance to get into bow range of a moose.
I loved the look on their faces when they finally notice us with our wtf look and pose. Their plans ruined because we were already their. Our plans ruined because of the racket they made getting their. They talk and make a new plan and head off to the left outta sight. My bro and i can only hope that co comes back today.
After all that racket 15 mins later their back on the quads and start heading out. Is this how those guys hunt. My god that's why I like small micro swamps i can hunt undisturbed.

no more action for the rest of the day. We meet up with my dad spend some family time in a meadow on the way out and make it back to camp to try again.

Day 3.
As we're having breakfast the fellow hunters can be herd. They must of been camped down the road. We begin the Race and are in first place. Down into the swamp a lot quicker then normal trying
to beat these guys in. Passed a couple areas goin to fast and to noisey. Bam. Theirs a moose it is half spooked because we were going to fast. It has horns, a nice spiker. Dammit, range finders in the back pack were not really ready and it takes off. Too load to fast trying to get in their and set up. We are kicking ourselves that was our chance for the day. We decide to try and track the moose and my brother presses on to try and get ahead of it.
At this point the Quaders decide to start hunting. Down into the swamp on their ATV's and our morning hunt is over.
Suprising enough the guys do the same thing drive all around and then start to leave right away. Hunting is about patience which these guys seem to lack.
The hunt ends no luck but some great experiences with my family. Always learning new things and building memory's together.

Back to the grind at work( Lamers)

grouse opens for rifle and were back out hunting. Bag the first one of the year feels good to dust off the 22 and practise some shooting. My shooting seems really steady im thinking the bow practising is also helping my rifle shooting
my bro and his first of the season

Nothing worse than having quads ruin your hunt. I suppose they have every right to be there but its a downer when you are trying to keep a low profile in an area. I am more and more willing to pack out a moose 2km so as to get into private areas. Were you guys calling at all?

Yah I was kinda bummed about the quads but half expected it in that area. It gets hunted pretty hard. On an upside I found a free arrow with mechanical broad head from them on the way out. Then found a brand new skinning/gut knife with spare blade, case and instructions from someone last year

My dad was the designated caller for the weekend. He also had an old moose shoulder blade he uses for raking trees. It almost seemed like the raking scared the little spiker. It does sound like a big bull moose so maybe he got scared. It has Been pretty warm and dry so I think the moose are still nocturnal and weren't in the rut mood yet.

Starting to check my other areas now no moose yet but the Moose trails are looking like their getting used. Seen a bull moose head on a quad goin through town. Maybe an 8 or 9 pointer. Someone filled an leh tag! Got me pretty stoked

Precisely why I quit hunting around Terrace....way too many yahoos and too many hunts ruined by the same people you describe. You should stick to your "micro=spots" and avoid the rat race. :) The areas in the photos though is one of the more popular hunting spots around this area...

Well better late the never

october bow only any bull

off work Wednesday down to my favorite swamp donkey hangout. First time in their this year. Man I love this swamp. No other tracks from human lots of Moose and bear sighn on the way In I feel at home here lots of good spots to hang for the day and I have the moose trails figured out so walking is rather easy.
http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps9e7a42c4.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps9e7a42c4.jpg.html)

my dad and bro got off a little early too and they came down to join me in some family fun. Being a half day we were hunting but more making a plan for the rest of the opening.
We can hear movement in the meadow after what seemed like an eternity a cow shows itself. Nice big blond back cow. We can see more movement in the thick bush but the other animal dosnt show itself.
Now it's amazing to see how catious moose can be. With the slightest movement from us the cow would stop and sniff the air catiously looking around. So catious I couldn't even get the camera out for some pics. We practised our ninja stealth mode enjoying the natural beauty of the area and the Moose eating and moving along the edge of the meadow.
The day ends with a solid plan for the bow only season.
Me and dad had the Thursday off so we headed down to our home away from home. My dad was goin in north of me and i was goin back to where we seen the cow. I get down to where i plan to do some calling just as it gets bright enough to legally shoot something. I do a series of cow calls over a couple hours with no response. Now i always seem to find rut trees close where I was so I decide to warm myself up and go for a wonder. Sure enough their is a rut tree very close to where I had been calling

So for bow hunting I use a deferent stradegy then rifle hunting and find myself staying still more then walking around. It's a little harder to get a shot with a bow well randomly walking so still hunting is more my stradegy

Theirs lots of trails around me some I assume is bear because the tracks don't sink into the mud like a moose would but some are from moose.

I am pretty sure this is a moose bed. Looks cosy and soft and their is moose tracks coming too and from it

by this time of day I get into radio contact with my dad. It's still pretty early in the morning He asks if I was doin some calling and if I had any visuals. I tell him no visuals but i was doin lots of calling. He informs me I sound to much like a wolf. wtf I think no way my ego is shattered I have a pretty good cow call and don't really understand how I could change it. The minute we say roger and get off the radio. Two wolves right where I had just walked in started howling. Ahhhah that's what my dad herd not me. I start wondering if they were looking for me doin cow calls and maybe that's why the moose arnt being volcal.
Now wolves are kinda Erie especially when all you have is a stick and string for defence. I never use to get to worked up or spooked about bears and wolves but this year is different. I blame half of it because of all the bear attack stories I have been reading on hbc this year( thanks guys) it is even worst if I'm walking out and i no I wouldn't be able to get a quick shot off with the bow because of the thick brush or awkward spots I'm in. I no longer feel like the too predater like I have in past years. Maybe it's a good thing to be extra catious but I hope i get over it sooner then later.
The day comes and goes with no more major action.

all I'm goin to say is it rains on the northcoast. I mean RAIN. Yes that is all capitals for a reason. No movement can't here anything threw the down poor rain. Did i mention it rained. My day consisted of calling and hiding in the trees. Some might call me a sissy but I carry an umbrella in my back pack and it was a life saver today. Aloud me to somewhat comfortably wait out the rain. I use to have a blach one but changed to blue so no one would take a shot at the black dot in the bushes

About 2 hours in we were kinda bored probly making too much noise up in the trees and suddenly
orrrahh. A bull moose had quietly came in. Sounded close like 60 yards away in the trees.
Now nothing wakes you up more then a bull moose grunting really close. I sneak down the tree and do a cow call. He responds. My god this might be it I actually called in a bull
moose.
My shooting lanes in his direction.

me and the bull talk back and forth a little bit but the bugger is looping around us downwind. I have the horrible feeling he is going to wind us. And sure enough his calls soon turn and head back upwind still randomly grunting but diffidently heading away from us. A little disappointed but it was still a super cool experience and a first for me.

Gos any bull

Dad and i booked the whole week long opening off. We started out on Sunday shooting the guns. I wish I had more time to practise, if i shot my gun as much as my bow I would be a marksman. Life is a balance of wants and needs and spare time seems to be getting shorter and shorter these days. Shooting good we make a game plan and even go for a little scout.

Opening morning day one

it has been raining hard for awhile now and day one of the hunt was lookin to be a wet one. Up super early I leave the wife and kid at home and head out on the first adventure of rifle season.
http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps5120c946.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps5120c946.jpg.html)

So I debated to post about day one. But here it is. We have been kinda battling for this one area with some other locals. It's actually a large area quite capable of holding a couple hunters with out runing into each other. Not getting to deep into the situation.
me and dad show up super early way before shooting light. We sneak down in and wait along the edge for legal shooting light full rain gear under our camo jackets and hip waiters on we are pumped and anxiously waiting for sunrise so we can finish the walk in with out spooking any game. Finally it's light enough and we continue into what we call the pizza tree( my bro brought us pizza one day while packing out a moose) up into the tree to look around and the waiting game begins. About an hour in some low fog rolls into the meadow, and then i spot them two moose they look like cows about 250 yards away. Their moving fast then a small bull emerges. He is in full chase mood goin after these cows. I point in the direction and tell my dad BULL. He has his rifle in the tree and pulls the scope covers off. The low fog makes it hard to see. They move across fast and into a group of trees. I bail outta the tree grab my gun and ready for a shot when they emerge outta the trees.
Kaaaabbbbbooommm my jaw drops someone else was over their and just shot the bull. We wait for movement but their is none. A second shot goes off. Defiantly a moose down. We wait a coupe minutes and then pull out knowing they will be stirring up this area dealing with their kill and go to a different area.
Theirs lotsa day left so we decide to bail into an area where my dad got his bull the year before.
http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsf0badac1.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsf0badac1.jpg.html)

still raining hard we spend the rest of the day in this other area with no luck.

Day 2
down into the area where my dad got his bull last year( not where other guys got bull)
its raining hard still. We spend the day walking the whole area. Theirs moose trails everywhere and lotsa fresh bear poop in the one back corner. I am kinda down and my faith of finding another bull is very low. I debate about tracking the bear it's poops where huge and they where everywhere. We don't see any fresh moose sighn no fresh willow chews or rub trees. I spend the middle of the day prepping a tree and clearing a spot so I can come back and hunt this spot easier and more comfortable next time. I meet up with my dad and we chill until sundown enjoying the outdoors and the plentiful rainfall that won't seem to stop. It has been wet I don't take many photos, just trying to stay somewhat dry and warm. This was my first time using chest waiters. My dad won't go with out them and this hunt has made me a believer chest waiters are a must.

Thanks all really makes me glad i kept the thread goin. We didn't cape him out but the skull and antlers will have a special place on the wall. Really is a terrace bull of a lifetime. The cool colour comes from the alder trees the moose like to rub the velvet off on , You can always tell a coastal moose because of it. It just seems normal to me and when I see a moose with white antlers I'm like what the hell.

Day 3 packin and gutting
so moose down at 230. ( who says the hunt is only the morning and evening) dad took a neck shot at 27 yards threw some thick brush and the moose dropped on the spot then drowned in the water because of the spine shot
http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsee772ec4.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsee772ec4.jpg.html)
after a photo op and some celebration we began the process of gutting the big boy. It has been so wet we didn't have much choice but to do it where he fell.

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps0a1d3d2e.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps0a1d3d2e.jpg.html)

it took awhile to do trying to keep the meat as clean as possible. We got it gutted and then headed back to the truck marking a trail out and to meet my bro who was now off work and was suppose to meet us down their for an evening hunt We got into radio contact as he neared our hunting spot and we met at the truck, swapped out day packs for our pack frames and headed back in to finish the deed.
we finished quartering the moose in the dark got it hung in some trees using headlamps loaded the neck ribs and antlers onto the pack frames and hung some sweaty clothes around the now hanging moose and headed out for the night.

This became a bigger ordeal the we expected. We were soon off our poorly marked trail and wondering around with heavy pack frames on in the dark. The trail was lost. We were lost. Unable to head back to the moose and restart we headed towards the only silhouette of a mtn our truck was parked near. It took forever over huge dead trees, around creeks and thick bush. We almost decided to stop and wait for day light. GPS compass etc in our other packs. Jackets and sweaters hangin at the moose, we were in a sticky situation. My bro really wanted To ditch his pack ,his back killing him we new their was a good chance we wouldn't find it in the morning so we pressed on.

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag117/Kilometers123456/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps3a92c6ec.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/Kilometers123456/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps3a92c6ec.jpg.html)

we kept goin thinking we were close as we pushed threw what we thought was the thick bush right before the truck. we emerged on the other side and realized we were now in a huge meadow. Wtf where are we. I recognized the meadow. I had been their that morning. We had ended up side lining the whole swamp and were way of course.
After a hole bunch of bad words and some more hiking we made it to the road. We were far from the truck but on a road.
Exhausted we finally found the truck and were headed home.

season is pretty much over for this guy. Did some duck hunting with a couple birds down the other day.
I still have a goat leh tag that ends in feb I believe. Freezers full of moose otherwise I would of been more willing to go if we didn't connect with a moose this year I went for a little dog walk/ scout the other day

i have seen goats here and hiked it just for fun before I was a hunter. Their was goat hair everywhere and trails galore. Lack of snow in terrace is keeping the goats high. Will see if I pursue the goat tag more in jan and feb.

I hope your season was as fun as mine!! Happy holidays ehhhh!
