How many of you out there are students? Reason I ask is because I get so jealous looking at all you non students out there, with money and time to burn during the fall on the best pastime of them all. What are you guys studying and how do you balance school and hunting in the fall?
I have been in school for way to long now, (architecture) but have tried to put in a late season texada hunt, as well as a spring bear hunt as a way of getting time in outside of school semesters. Other than that I hit the bush on weekends and work like a banshee during the week to get my stuff done. How about the rest of you? I know you are out there.

Im currently finishing my third year as an electrician. I have done all my schooling in the spring so far, so in that respect there hasn't been any confliction with my hunting time. My boss is also really good at giving time off for things such as hunting, so long as when you're at work, you're actually working hard. But in the same token, I don't like the city at all, and am going to relocate to the interior on completion of my apprenticeship. My hunting time suffers due to all the driving back and forth!

When I was going to University, I averaged ~ 3 weekday mornings of goose/deer hunting and every weekend as well, and ice fished all winter!

While nowhere even near wealthy, I had both a car and a truck ensured, bought plenty of toys (hunting gear/rifles), shot 10,000+ rounds of shotgun competing in Sporting Clays all over BC/Alta each summer, did at least a 10 day sheep hunt and 7 day mulie hunt/year, and ended up graduating after 4 1/2 years with a paltry $3300 in student loans!

A good paying summer job was crucial (worked for a week during Christmas break as well), as was a creative class schedule in the fall semester (I always went for the evening labs and late classes where possible), and the ability to juggle 10 tasks at a time (pound off a ton of assignments and study like a madman when time permitted).

DAMN did I get a lot of hunting in... I miss the freedom I enjoyed back then (looking back now I can't belive the amount of free time I had). Those WERE the days!

I guess my point is... you're likely living the most carefree days of your life now...Enjoy it while you can!

Work WILL get in the way of your play, I can guarantee it!!!!

Im currently in grade 11. So it is pretty easy for me to find time to go hunting, although the trickey thing is getting my dad to come with me (and to find someone who knows how to hunt, cause we are new).

Other than that the only other problem is homework.

Student here - like stone Ibook my school schedule in the fall semester with hunting in mind. I am lucky enough to be self employeed and as such work all the time I am not studying or hunting.
Not much work gets done during hunting season, and once I finish school I am sure hunting will sometimes take a back seat to work as well. But hunting IS part of my life, and as such i will take the time to get out hunting even if it means sacrificing efficiency in the bizz.

This is my last fall and I grad with a management degree (BBA) - only three courses though so I plan to do a sheep hunt before fall semester, Caribou hunt and one other sask/north alberta BC hunnt during fall semester as well. No bragging, but I also maintain an 85% average.

Well I just started this year so I wasn't sure how my hunting and schooling were going to work, but I have classes for on monday, tuesday, and thursday so I had long weekends for hunting and general bombing around in the bush. Only hard part was coming back home at the end of each weekend.

Full time student four courses a semester, full time work 35-40 hours a week (I work as an independant contractor so time is flexible) My wife does the same thing, ist a pain in the butt, however I will be done very soon so I think its worth it. I manage to take 10 days off in november for deer hunting or another time if we get a moose draw. I am lucky my job has tons of variety including working the occasional cruise for 7 days to stop me from burning out.

   That's hilarious.

Just wait until you have a full time job, a wife, and kids. You will dream of the good old days when you could go hunting all weekend every weekend, with no one to think about but yourself. I'm sure your money is tight, but the reigns are loose my friend. Enjoy it while you can, because trust me, one day you will think back to how great you used to have it.

I'm juggling classes 2 days a week, work 2-5 days a week, toastmasters which is like a class in itself, this rodeo queen business ( it's a blast but lots of work), and riding/training 3 going on 5 horses....it's a busy life but I love it. I still managed to get out enough to land myself a mulie buck this past fall, and I'm gonna be hunting like a bugger once spring bear starts up and especially this fall....oh do I have plans for the fall. I've gotta make up for the time I'll lose should I win Miss Rodeo Canada and become the property of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association for the year.

I'm a student, I love it. I can bail on classes and go hunting anytime the weather is good, profs don't care as long as I keep my grades up. I just go on the theory you can't hunt in the dark, but you can study in the dark. I try to make it to class 3 days a week when the hunting is good, 4 if its not so good. Never found a company that lets me bail once a week to go chase deer.

I think the king of it is Mattb only guy I know who can take a month off to chase mulies and not even notice it in school:lol:.

I highly recommend getting done with the schooling and working, and retire. Took me awhile to figure that out, but it works good.

then theres me...
went back to school at age 30. want to become a LEO now. Construction sucks. The last company I was at went bankrupt right before X-mas, and we all had to find new jobs. I went from full time classes and working as a supervisor to 2 classes a week, and back to being a builder.
I just want to hurry up and get it over with.
7 classes until I have my "Criminal Justice Degree"... i can just see the light at the end of the tunnel!

My advice for any young aspiring male students on this website looking to maximize their time afield and retire early:

Take out a student loan for $12,000/year, ditch classes, and spend the time at the gym on an INTENSE fitness program, at the tanning salon, body waxing, and veneers/dental work as well as dance lessons and maybe a few tasteful tatoos... (basically work on the Porn Star image).

Then prowl cougar bars, retirement homes, and RV parks and find yourself a wealthy sugar momma!

I am with you guys that you can make the classes work, I did it in undergrad, when the profs didn't care, but now they expect you to be there every day 9-6 and the workload is so heavy that you gotta do 60 hours a week to take any time off. As for the wife/mortgage/kids thing that some of you were mentioning, I have 2 out of 3 (no kids yet), but I am blessed with a wife who likes moosemeat, so it ain't half bad (trying to convince her that elk is sooo much better:lol:). I suppose at the end of the day I should count my blessings for the days I do get out...good to know there are more of you out there in the same predicament though.

FT student's way better than working for a living!

I was on the same program as MattB and Agaucher.

Tried to book all classes for Wednesday and Thursday, rest of the time in the bush. The days are short in November which leaves lots of reading and studying time in the wall tent at night.

Taking 3 weeks off to go Grizz hunting, 2 months for guiding, a trip to Sask, a moose/elk hunt and 2-3 weeks for deer would never happen in the 'real world'.

i'm a third year forestry student, going for my degree. I still find enough time to go hunting, I would like to get out more, but hey, i can't complain. Next year however, I wont have a truck, or knowledge of any areas... anyone from the lower mainland interested in adopting a 20 year old hunting partner?

Just suck it up and get the education over with. I moved to Burnaby when I was 16 and did two years at BCIT, only I had to do 10 months of straight classwork each year, 5 days a week, had no vehicle so I couldn't hunt at all.:-( The only saving grace was I worked for an outfitter in the summers between & after which helped take away some of the need to go hunting.8-)

By age 21 I was a Journeyman Mechanic (I'm 23 now), make over $80k a year plus fuel & company vehicle. I take all the time I want to hunt & fish now, have lots of toys, and lots of property. Work hard, and play harder. I live with my girlfriend who is a biologist, we have no kids, and it's nothing like being married 'cause I still get laid all the time. Life is good.

Graduated with a BBA from OUC in Kelowna with Goat Guy. During those 4 years in school, I didn't spend as much time hunting as I would have liked too, or as much as Goat Guy. All my effort went into working every weekend and doing homework for a full course load. I still managed to get out every once in a while. 3 of 4 years I was able to fill a mule deer tag. Finished school without a debt.

Now that school is done, I am investing more time into hunting. Last year I only missed one weekend during the season (Sept - Dec.) I have a cozy job with the government and have no strings attached (wife). The job give me 4 weeks of holidays and every third friday off as a flex day. Once again, I will be an avid "weekend warrior" this coming season and holidays will give me an added bonus to plan trips for the first time in my life. Going sheep hunting in Aug for 10 days...can't wait!!!!!

In two months I'll be done with my first year of college down here. I know what you mean when you say you don't have money! I'm going to need to work my tail off this summer. I need a new bow, and to pay for more classes of course. ;)

I am 2 months away from my business degree and have had it pretty good during the past three hunting seasons. I always created my schedules with hunting in mind. The only thing that really screwed me up was working every weekend. Nevertheless, unless there was something real pressing going on at the school on any particular day, it definitely didn't take much to convince myself that hunting was a better option than school. It should be interesting to see what this season brings me in terms of hunting time as I have no idea what the working world has in store!

I was in Alberta for school the last two years. I have 6 hrs of classes per day and then I work as a bartender at nights. Managed not to take out any loans yet. I got to hunt on Saturdays and once in a while during the week. What an awesome release, chased alot of mulies with my bow but never connected. Finally took a couple of whitails at the end of the season. Just wondering how everyones GPA reacts in the second semester when seasons over, mine increases by .3-.4. I am hoping to be back to BC next year. I am going to get a fix this summer by going stone sheep hunting. I can't wait, I'm gettting the off season shakes. who else is dying for bear season to get here?

I'm a student at BCIT also, taking the Architectural and Building Engineering Technology program.

I'm just starting into hunting, (got my hunters licence last month) and I'm waiting for m PAL to arrive, hopefully before spring bear season is done.

I find it so true what you people said about free time in these years in school. These are the good times partying and having fun all weekend and some weekdays and I better make the most of them.

Im a third year electrical apprentice. Keeps me hunting closer to home which may be a blessing in disguise when you look at the cost of fuel. Soon enough though... The problem isnt getting the time off, its being able to afford to take it.
