I'm lucky enough to be able to go on a buffalo hunt this year and am trying to decide between bringing my 338 win mag or my 300 ultra mag I like both guns and they both have the same scope. If you were me which would you take and why? Thanks

No reason not to use the bigger gun for the biggest land animal in North America. :)

Whichever you are most comfortable shooting, keep in mind power isn't nearly as important as shot placement.

either is fine. Thats the least of your worries...don't cut that tag too early, worry more about seeing one first.

Hmmm pretty partial to the .338...Barnes 225 grain works awesome on elk...and moose...and grizzly..but little experience with the other calibre.

Take the ultra mag, don't risk having to shoot twice :p (220gr bullet at 2970 fps will give you 4300fpe)

The 338 will kill them just as dead as the 300UM. Steven has it right.

Either one.

Here is a clip of one of the Bison I got several yrs ago, might wet your appitite a bit.
Always wished I had re-edited this in higher quality. might have to find the raw footage and try it again.

Either caliber will do fine. Take some time to lean Bison anatomy and where to shoot. They are NOT the same as moose or elk.

Thanks for the story and pictures (Cas-has-cars). This is a great photo showing just how big a bison's stomach is and how far forward it extends into the rib cage.

I have been part of many Bison kills. I alway emphasive to the shooter that bullet placement needs to be tight to the shoulder to avoid a liver or stomach shot. Bison anatomy is different from our other ungulates, and a regular " behind the shoulder" shot will often just hit the liver. I recommend a shot in line and just above the elbow, that will take out the heart. Here's a couple of pics showing heart and lung location.

Bullet placement is #1...bullet performance is #2.... everything else is bull
