Many of you remember the thread started about the Banning of the Surrey Rod and Gun show about a month ago, Well We are making headway but the public hearing on the 21st will seal our fate.

This story is making its rounds on the Province today and there is a Public hearing on July 21st at City Hall. I would love to see that Hall overflowing with NFA, BCWF, HBC'ers, Sportsman, Hunters Fishers, Shooters etc.
Please mark this date on your calender and share this as much as you can. The support of the public is absolutely critical to allow this show to happen. If more Anti's make it to this hearing than Pro Gunners & sportsmen are doomed. Share on Facebook, Send Letters, Smoke Signals, Tell a friend.

I am a Core examiner for Firearm Training Center, the owner is one of the named organizers of the show in the article. I am helping to promote the Public hearing on avenues that he wouldnt IE Facebook HBC etc...

Sadly, I will be teaching a Core Course on the night of the hearing so I will not be able to speak or attend, we are unable to change the date of the hearing so someone has to stay behind and teach the course. I am far less involved in the planning of the Show so it makes much more sense for myself to stay behind and teach.

It is difficult to deal with these types of Bylaws (restrictions on land use) after they have been passed. I am some what surprised the organizers were not aware that cities in the Metro area would have Bylaws restricting such events. All the City Councils I am familiar with have majority anti firearms members on them. Anything firearms related will get the boot out of town very quickly. I believe you will find the same at the City of Surrey.

I would be surprised if there was a strong anti group at the meeting. They will more likely have their National, Provincial or Community office send correspondence directly to council.

The question Council members will be asking themselves is : How can I get the most votes out of this in the Civic election coming in the fall? You will see grand standing and lots of political speeches as they fight to get their name in the news paper and on the tv coverage of the meeting. The Council members will not be concerned about a group of firearms owners and hunters unless they live in Surrey and represent a large group of voters. About 3000 to 5000 votes in Surrey Civic election can result in a Councilor loosing in this falls Civic election.

Every speaker will have to state their name and address. If you don't live in Surrey you will see they don't care too much about what you say.

I have been involved in opposing these types of Bylaws before they are passed and have had very little success..
In 2010 Port Moody passed a similar bylaw. No one spoke or wrote letters opposing it.
2009 Port Coquitlam passed a similar bylaw. 6 people appeared at the public meeting opposing the bylaw. 1 Poco resident, me and 4 others from CGN forum. A friend of City Council was able to have his firearms training courses held at a local hotel "grand fathered".
In 2013 Delta passed a similar bylaw for their side of Scott Rd (west side). No one spoke or wrote letters opposing the bylaw.
New Westminister has a similar Bylaw (2008 I believe, I missed the notice of their public meetings).

A quick glance at the Council report and I found the important part:
With the adoption of Surrey Zoning By-law No. 12000 in 1993, the manufacture and sale of
firearms and ammunition were specifically prohibited in all Zones in Surrey
When this bylaw was adopted in 1993 I guess there was no opposition to it. A big hint that there is an anti firearms bylaw in Surrey is the fact there is only one firearms store. It is by Guildford. It was "grand fathered" because it was there prior to 1993. It has changed owners but never left vacant so the non conforming use is permitted.

The recent ones that I have been involved with that did have limited success was the Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows and Mission; (No) Discharge of Fireams Bylaws. These were very different from what yo are dealing with.

I wish you luck but I will take a pass on this fight and save it for another day.
Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss options or strategies.

FYI, the larger the turnout, the bigger the voice.

Sure 5 30.I am told by a journalist for city hall that the public hearing starts at 7 but it may be that just the hearings start at 7 and the meeting at 5 30. Better to be early.
Still no answer from anyone who, if anyone, will represent the show and talk to council.
