Hey bud,

I got a bull draw (group) for Sept 10-30. I've never even been up there tho... (Northern Ontario moose hunter by trade). Think rut will happen as early as my tag? Any tips would be awesome!!!

5-1 is a great area for meese! Have had lots I luck out that way, recent logging unfortunately has pushed a lot of critters out. Plenty I good spots around sheridan lake.

5-1 doe tag shouldn't be a problem, plenty in the first big cut on the north of sheridan lake fsr

rut starts last sept...if cold it can really get going fast..Id be looking around water and swamps spot and stalk till sept 25 be hanging tampons with cow pee high on branches on points of land and then be cow calling....

Spot and stalk dark till 10,ish then go back inside the trees to find bedded bulls 20 yards inside the trees..usually on dry patches where they have several escape routes..around meadows and feed...back to spot and stalk 4 pm till dark

calling get high..no not that way silly...find a high vantage area where you can see a long way call every 15 minutes on the clock...loud and proud call COW..

still plenty of moose there

cheers

No boat needed. If you are setting up a wall tent, lots of good places, some nice spots right of SheridanLake Fsr off Sheridan lake Road West.

And you are right into hunting first thing. Lots of good meese areas, good areas to get calling as well

I live in 5-1 (ten minutes from West Sheridan FSR!), I would say Moose are at an all time low for numbers. Late October is the hardest draw for Moose here as well, the rut is over, the weather is normally mild and the Bulls tend to stay put after the rut until the weather changes. Sheridan Lake will be thick with hunters all October as October is the all buck season for Mulies in Reg. 5. I prefer either the September or November draws for Moose. WAY less hunters. October is also a tough month for Deer, November is a much easier hunt for Does and as the rut approaches, even the 4-points get easy to hunt. Also get yourself a Whitey tag, their population in 5-1 is on the upswing.

If we don't see a rebound in Moose numbers soon, you can probably kiss this LEH area good bye.

I also have 4 game cams on my property. Since last summer I have lots of pics of deer (both Whities and Mulies), pics of Black Bear, Cougar, Lynx, Bobcat, Wolf, Coyote, and Fox. I only have one pic of Moose. We used to have our property littered with Moose marbles each spring when the snow melted, this year I couldn't find a single pile. We have lived here for 20 years.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Given the comments, I'm pretty excited to get up there and put my calling to the test during the last week or so of Sept.

Anyone know how to get a map of area cut blocks, by age, such that I could find myself a few 3-4 year old cuts near water / marsh? Ha ha- no I don't want anyone to actually pull the trigger for me, just looking for all the beta I can find so I can make as many plans as possible via google earth without using all of my limited vacation on scouting!

Thanks again all!

i hunt 5-02a, and google earth and a map book was the best thing going when i first started hunting that area, google earth is a bit out dated but it works, and last week of sept them bull should be getting fired up,
