The LEH system in BC is Right Screwed UP!
And let me explain just why I think so (using today's results for the example).

Put in at EXTREMELY Good (as in basically 1:1 odds) for Muley. Miss.
First year since living here I gave up on Elk in the back-yard (Island) and went to MUCH better odds on the mainland: Miss

Of course didn't expect the Kamloops sheep, so the results were No Surprise: Miss.

Had several LEH "Virgins" put into our area for moose, both group and singles: Miss.

Yet for the THIRD year in a row, I draw for Moose??
Shouldn't MY odds have been SUBSTANTIALLY Reduced having drawn the previous two years straight - This making it THREE?
Should not the "Virgin" singles & Group applications surpassed mine?

Also put into a rather dismal odds area for Grizz, and got it?? Huh? You're kidding me?

I know no-one in the ministry that would have tipped the odds in my favor - that is CERTAIN. I can think of NO reason why I would have drawn the moose (THREE TIMES NOW!) when others who are at supposedly MUCH better odds miss. Nor can I understand why I miss at pretty well one to one odds? Nor why I could possibly collect an over-subscribed Grizz?

NONE of this makes any sense to me beyond point out the Fact this system is about as Screwed Up as it could possibly get!

I got nothing again, scares me hearing guys have had got nothing for 10 or more years, this is my fourth fall with nothing and I think the system needs to run better. Wouldn't it be better if you draw a tag, you aren't eligible for that species the following year? It would give some a chance and end the stories about guys getting the same draw every year! My buddy got his grizz and moose again, that's 4-5 years in a row with the same tags and it's not an easy draw to win, lots of people apply for it, he just keeps getting it, lucky bugger. At the very least don't make me wait so long to be bummed out. Luckily there's lots of hunting in BC so I'll still have a fun fall.

First year since living here I gave up on Elk in the back-yard (Island) and went to MUCH better odds on the mainland: Miss

Of course didn't expect the Kamloops sheep, so the results were No Surprise: Miss.

Had several LEH "Virgins" put into our area for moose, both group and singles: Miss.

Yet for the THIRD year in a row, I draw for Moose??
Shouldn't MY odds have been SUBSTANTIALLY Reduced having drawn the previous two years straight - This making it THREE?
Should not the "Virgin" singles & Group applications surpassed mine?

I know no-one in the ministry that would have tipped the odds in my favor - that is CERTAIN. I can think of NO reason why I would have drawn the moose (THREE TIMES NOW!) when others who are at supposedly MUCH better odds miss. Nor can I understand why I miss at pretty well one to one odds? Nor why I could possibly collect an over-subscribed Grizz?

NONE of this makes any sense to me beyond point out the Fact this system is about as Screwed Up as it could possibly get!

Should maybe read up on how statistics and odds work.. Also when you draw a tag your odds are reduced the next year. No where does it say if you draw a tag one year it's impossible to get drawn the next year. So even if you got the kamloops lake sheep draw one year you could still in theory get it 3 or 4 years in a row. Almost impossible that it would happen but not impossible. You always have a chance.

I got nothing again, scares me hearing guys have had got nothing for 10 or more years, this is my fourth fall with nothing and I think the system needs to run better. Wouldn't it be better if you draw a tag, you aren't eligible for that species the following year? It would give some a chance and end the stories about guys getting the same draw every year! My buddy got his grizz and moose again, that's 4-5 years in a row with the same tags and it's not an easy draw to win, lots of people apply for it, he just keeps getting it, lucky bugger. At the very least don't make me wait so long to be bummed out. Luckily there's lots of hunting in BC so I'll still have a fun fall.

I just applied for a 13:1 doe draw in one of my stomping grounds. I realize that just for that draw which has somewhat good odds in comparison to many, I can only expect to actually get it 1 out of every 13 years. $78 over 10 years and I should probably have that doe.

Lets say I go for a 30:1 bull mouse, a 20:1 elk and a 10:1 doe. My odds of getting *anything* are 20:1 and I should only expect something every 20 years. One could be strategic and go for the less desirable draws, but most people want the popular ones. Sure there's people who have had bad luck on a 4:1 draw for 10 years, but the odds of missing 4:1 10 years in a row is still better than getting a 10:1 doe in 1 year.

We have a pretty kickass open season here in BC. Lots of deer, bears, spike fork moose, etc. Imagine we lived in one of these places with a week long open season? Or mostly private land? We have it pretty darn good.

Don't mean to flame, but is anyone getting reports about anomalies on the results? My wife frequents an FB hunting site and some there are saying that one in a shared hunt are getting a draw but the others aren't. I just got off the phone with a friend who got a shared moose for his 2nd choice in an area that is oversubscribed. That shouldn't be happening.

Absolutely. One of the guys I know, wins several tags every year (including region 3 sheep, moose, elk). Despite being banned from hunting for a year (two years ago), having violation ticket(s) and warnings every year. He got a bull moose tag in region 3 this year - third year in the row. Yeah, he got his tags in the same year he was banned from hunting too... And the next year... And regulation says that if you have a ticket you are not eligible for LEH draws! Very unfair to honest and ethical hunters. The system is definately flawed.

People don't understand statistics and probabilities very well.

They get mad when they strike out on 5 : 1 draws. What they don't consider is that with 5 : 1 odds, they have an 80% chance of NOT being drawn every year they apply for it. Is there any wonder there are many sad people for even relatively low odds hunts?

With a average of say 25:1, even if there was a preferred point system like they have in Alberta, you could still wait 7 years for a tag. With any hunt with odds over 20:1, a lottery is the only way to go

Got skunked as well, I was pouting in my corn flakes this morning, but then turned to HBC, and realized that I am once again among the many "losers".

I agree with having a lottery, but also think that your odds should improve every year that you miss a tag, so that eventually if you put your time in the lottery you will win.
For example, no one should win an island elk or bison twice until someone who has waited years and enters the lottery once... call me a socialist, communist, whatever...

Congrats to all the successful winners!! Hopefully you fill your tags!!! Especially those that secured the more desirable species/locations!!
