Hey guys. Im going to be getting a lab later this year and was wondering if anyone would recommend a good training book. Im not a big waterfowl er so the lab wont be much of a duck dog. But I would like to train him to retrieve upland birds. As well he will be my hiking companion pack dog on sheep hunts and backpacking trips. If anyone could recommend a good book that would be great. Thanks

As you are planning to use him more for an upland dog get the DVD Gundog Training Spaniels by Kenneth C Roebuck, It covers all the bases you will want, different breed same procedure. Great piece of reference.

"The Labrador Shooting Dog" by Mike Gould is about the best book I've read on training Labs and retrievers in general....much of his training techniques can be used with other breeds as well... Easy reading book and his methods work... Here's a link to Amazon where you can order it:

You might also be able to get it through your local library.......Libraries are a good place to start to see if a book is something that might work for you.....if you like it, then you can go out and buy it.

Try and find "Water Dog" by John Whooters sp? it is a older book but considered one of the best, I used it to train my labs.

It's by Richard Wolters and I agree it's a good book,http://www.amazon.com/Richard-A.-Wolters/e/B001ILMAGM That video by Ken Roebuck is top notch for anyone wanting to train their own flushing retrieve gundog, I highly recommend it.

I have this book and it seems to work well for me and I am a complete neophyte when it comes to training dogs. Along with great advise from professional trainers that are on this forum you should be able to produce a passable/functional hunting partner. Game Dog does both upland and waterfowl training, but I find the basics are the same for either discipline.

10 minute retriever was the best book of 4 that I read including gun dog and water dog. I have never trained a dog before.

A good basic one to start for puppy fundamentals is "Retriever Puppy Training: The Right Start for Huntin" by Cherylon Loveland and Clarice Rutherford.
