Hey all,

Looking for a rod & reel combo for a newbie that can be used for casting and jigging plus the potential for light "omg it's all we have handy" trolling.

Rod would be for my girlfriend who has never fished before and it would be a "leave it in the car" thing so sub $100 and idiot-proof would be great. Ocean & rivers - salmon, rockfish, larger trout, etc. something

Ideas? Or am I asking for a unicorn?

Is she just learning and there's the possibility of her quitting? Or does she actually know what she's doing? If it's the first one just pick her up a cheap spinning rod/reel combo from Walmart, I'd she sticks with it then up grade her gear.

Get the larger size diawa D-shock combo. Around $39 and good for everything... I have had one for 3 years and have treated it like crap and have never done anything to maintain it. It hasn't complained once. Caught everything from little 6" trout to 12lb coho.

Check out Canadian tire. Lots of good sales on rod and spinning combos. Can typically see up to 50% off.

I believe shinanos are on sale at the moment.
