So I know everyone starts with a joke. Most of my jokes are rated R or worse but this joke makes me laugh :

Q) How can you tell a clown farted ?

A) It smells funny.

So this last season was my first season hunting , ever. Nobody in my family hunts and I am the first person since a great grandfather that has owned guns. I have wanted to hunt since my mid 20's however I found it very difficult to get into as nobody I know hunts. I had got my PAL and did my CORE back in 2008 , but moved overseas for a few years and didn't come back till 2011. Upon return I decided it was go time.

Initially I wanted to duck hunt and deer hunt and that was pretty much it. I bought myself A Tikka T3 lite in .270 (lefthanded) with a Buschnell Elite 3x9-40 scope and a Winchester SXP to get me started. I did my research and figures those were my best starting points. I figured I'd go middle of the road. I had no optics , no decoys , no calls , just a pair of camo waders and a Yukon jacket from Crappy Tire. I also bought an ex BC hydro truck to get me out to the deer.

Lucky for me my girlfriend was onboard for deer hunting and had no interest in sitting in a marsh waiting for ducks to fly over head low enough to shoot. So that being said I bought a white tail tag and a mule tag , got my migratory bird licence and was ready to go ! For someone with little to no previous info , and nobody to ask questions , its a pretty daunting task. None the less I made it happen and off we went , starting my season in mid to late October.

Our first few trips constituted driving FSR's and trying to figure out where deer would be , identifying signs and basically just ripping around in the truck. We hit probably 3 weekends in a row , Chilliwack , Harrison (sloquet) and Princeton. We didn't see anything until Princeton and by the then mule season was over. Not knowing we hung around looking for white tail. Not much point there. So i was getting pretty discouraged. My GF worked as a landscaper and had met a 75yr old Hungarian man who hunted his whole life and was quick to lend us books and give us tips. He was the best ! Him and his wife hadn't missed a season in 50yrs. Following his tips and intruction , we ventured up to Pemberton for the last day of mule season. We hiked around for 5 1/2 hours and saw nothing but a few other guys road hunting who said they had seen nothing. There were a ton of people up there as well. I figured that was it for the season and decided to call it a morning and go get some breakfast in Pemby. On the drive down , while the missus was passed out in the passenger seat , I spotted a buck while driving , he was down an embankment on the side of the road. I flipped out. I stopped the truck just behind a tree and crept out. I had my rifle behind my seat and did my best at loading er up from behind the tree and stepped out to see this guy starting at me. Not moving. I raised my barrel as slow and steady as I could and he didn't flinch. I aimed low and pulled the trigger. He got 4 of the highest bunny hops I have ever seen and slumped over in a heap. I was soooo stoked. We waited 15 minutes (as per my gf's request)and I never took my eyes off him. I ran down and was stoked to see he was a decent size. Having never field dressed a damn thing I was excited to get in there. I had watched a few videos on youtube but really wasn't sure. It took me about 20min to get him gutted out. It was awesome. The gf and I took an hour plus to drag him out and up the embankment. She did great holding his little back legs. By the time we got him to my truck I was gassed , bad. So we sat on the tail gate for a bit admiring this animal. 2 guys in a truck pulled up and were as excited as I was to see him. They asked what my secret was and i told em. Beginners luck. We loaded him into the bed and off I went. Beaming with excitement , heading to Mission to have him processed. Once we hit the bottom of the FSR I got pulled over by CSO's. Who pulled infront of my truck with tier lights flashing. Never have I been so excited to be pulled over !!! They asked if I had been hunting. F*#k yes was my reply , when asked if I had bagged anything the reply was the same. I told them it was in the back and to check it out. It was a smaller asian guy and a bigger native guy. I informed them i t was my first deer ever and told them the story. The native guy lit up , when he pulled the tarp back saying wholly shit , that's a nice 4x4. I didn't even know what that meant. They both shook my hand and congratulated me and off I went. I had another older gentlemen give me the same treatment when I stopped for fuel in Pemby. Said he got skunked that season the 12 times he went out. Off we went to Mission !
This is where he was lying

I was soo excited , he has been delicious , the most rewarding experience of my life. So i decided to buy some decoys and calls and get out for some ducks. I had moderate success , and a lot of learning (frustration) but it paid off. I got 4 mallards and 2 widgeon and on the second last day of the late snow goose season I got 2 geese. One of which was banded. That renewed my excitement like nobodies business.

I sent the band info in online and got my email shortly after. A 4 yr old female banded in Wrangle Island Russia in 2011. Unreal ! I live in an apartment in Kitsilano so I have had to pluck all my birds in the tub , followed by bringing in a bucket and smoking in the front grass area of my apartment on 4th ave. The geese were better then I thought as most people have a strong opinion of them tasting like crap. I made pulled goose sandwiches !

I am absolutely in love with hunting and making food for friends with things I have shot. Duck stock to cook the deer roasts in. Goose stock gravy , everything and anything I can make. It's been so awesome. Everything I have learnt has been from scouring online and finding this site. I have since got a spring bear tag (no luck , learned heaps) and went Turkey hunting twice ,found tons of signs , called some in close but being impatient cost me everything. Learned a ton though. I cannot wait for this upcoming season. Got my name in the LEH draw for a Pemby goat too. Thanks for all the advice and great threads this site is an invaluable resource to someone like me. Cheers men and women of hunting BC !

Welcome to the site! Great story......always wondered about "beginners luck", seen it so often and there just doesn't seem to be any logical reasoning as to why, enjoy it while it lasts! Very nice animal for your first deer, and having a gal that likes to tag along hunting is bonus to boot!

Congrats on a great hunt, Girth. Many of us here remember the excitement of our first deer and could feel yours in the story.

A tip. The trick to cooking a good deer steak is to not overcook it. Medium is over cooked. Medium rare is better and rare is best. Also let the meat rest for the same amount of time as you cooked it for and do not cut into the steak to find out if it's done. This will let out the moisture and turn it to boot leather very quickly.

Enjoy your hunting and enjoy your harvest. Most of all enjoy the great outdoors we have here in BC.

Thanks to everyone who posted for being so positive ! Super happy to have found the site and can't wait to post more as I move along through this next season. Tons to learn still , and enjoying every minute of it. The gf got a trip to the BCWF becoming an outdoor woman program and loved it all. Hopefully she gets on here as well.

As for me living in Kits and skinning and all that , everyone around here has been really good with the smoking , BBQ'n and what not. I found some sheds while bear hunting and was cleaning up in the front "yard" . Positive vibes from almost everyone. I'm literally on the corner of 4th and MacDonald. I still really need a house with a yard though. Foxtail , I bought a bow about two months ago and have been going ape shooting it into a foam block. Kinda tough , as again I don't have a real yard. It's addicting as hell.

Can't wait to find out about the LEH draw ! Hope everyone has a great summer and hope to run into a few of ya out in the woods !!
Cheers !

Just wait... You can get your bow hunting itch scratched with 3d's in the off season. Great practice and super fun. I try to only bowhunt until I get frustrated on the last day of the season and take the rifle out so I don't get skunked and end up shooting a buck at 20 yards.... Then kick myself until the next season lol.

Smoking at the front of your apt on 4th LOL!!! LOVE IT!!

Welcome to the addiction. I took the archery course at Boormans a few years back but I'm afraid to jump in because I know I'll go crazy with archery too. Just the shooting alone costs me a lot of time and money.

Just wait until you get bitten by the sheep bug.
