View Full Version : My Spring Black Bear

On Mother's day this bear was charging me, down a bank. I shot him with my Savage Lady Hunter 7mm-08, and Hornady 140 gr SST bullet. I shot him between the shoulder blades, so it exited out the bottom of his chest. Heart was detached in the chest cavity, both lungs gone, ribs broken on both sides, jello in the armpits and into the shoulder. Bullet exploded into shrapnel. Not a good meat bullet..

The bear sat down, looked surprised, and keeled over dead. The exit wound was a lot bigger than I was expecting.

He measured 5'7 nose to tail, but I have not squared him yet. He was very fat, and about 300lbs. Despite the meat loss due to jello, and trimming a lot of fat, I got 100lbs of deboned meat.

While I was skinning and quartering him, another bear kept approaching me and popping his jaws at me. I fired a shot over his head, to absolutely no effect. The second bear kept approaching me, so I had to retreat and I loaded up my shotgun and put some bird shot into his ass. Which only slightly bothered him. I grabbed a hind quarter and ran it inside to safety, and waited for the other bear to get lost. He was not into cannibalism thank goodness, he was thinking I would be a good meal. Eventually he shuffled off and I resumed my skinning and quartering. It was 25C and the flies and mosquitos were horrible. Fortunately I was able to get all the meat into a refrigerated unit within two hours of killing him.

This was my first completely solo bear, start to finish.

LOL it was at fifty feet when I shot him, he dropped on the spot...I LOVE this gun, it is very comfortable. I would change the bullet though, if I want to preserve more meat...

Good going "Rackem", nice write up and pictures. A little concerned about both the 'charging' and the other seemingly 'predator' bear's behavior....Nice feeling of self satisfaction when you accomplish all what you did, including the 'distractions,' I'll bet! Great stuff!

That's awsome. You are a real provider and great to see you on the forum it's been awhile.A heavier bullet might help reduce the shredding factor of the 270 they a fast round.

Mine is a 7mm-08....the bullet was a Hornady 140gr SST... fragmented on bone impact.

That's a good sized bear and a good story. But you have to explain the shot a little better, was he facing you and you shot through the top of him , was it a he or a she? The other bear hanging around might have been looking for a little love. ;)

I took the story as the bear was charging down a steep bank. Shot entered the back between shoulders and exited chest area?
Those nuts are a small clue.
Maybe the second bear was looking for love from her downed lover??

Yes bear was charging down a steep bank at me--shot him at fifty feet. Bullet entered between shoulder blades and exited chest.

Male bear, other bear also male. 20+ black bears in one km radius...

Nice going Rackem! And good to see you back on the site. Yeah, those SSTs can be destructive. They're a fast expanding bullet designed for deer hunters that want the dead right there scenario. Helped a guy from Alta last year and he shot a bear about the size of yours with a 300 win mag with 150gr SSTs. Um, not pretty. LOL Glad you like your gun I've got its sibling the Lightweight Hunter think I'll pack it this fall :)

Pretty impressive, I bought my wife a 7-08 and she loves it to, nice to see how good of a job they do. Getting a 100 lbs of deboned meat of that bear is a good amount.

Don't know how I missed this one.
One charging you, the other one popping his teeth.
Sounds like a day to remember.
Congrats!
