Yamaha's were the best till 2008. They changed the style after that and are not as reliable. Smaller water jackets, I am told.
Suzuki seems to be the flavor right now. Most guides on west coast are using Suzy now.
Nissan and Tohatsu are also strong motors. Seem to be coming on strong.

i ran a 9.9 merc 4 stroke on my 14 ft princecraft for 6 yrs that i had it ..no problems ..i pull of the cord and she fired right up .. ..it was a bit on the heavy and awkward side if you had to take it off and on the boat ..i'd own another tho ..no problem!

well i just ordered a 9.9hp mercury from chris @ inlet marine (site sponsor) great guy. it comes with a 5 year warranty. i looked at honda and they wanted $3800 after taxes and fees. i looked at yamaha and they wanted over $3300 after taxes. i payed alot less. ive always been a honda fan. my quad, genset, lawn mower pressure washer are all honda, but they just wanted to much for one and they are a tad bit heavier than others.

The Hondas are heavy. I have a 20hp 4stroke and I nearly fire a but across the water every time I put it on or take it off the transom. It does run smooth though.

The reason I know that is about 15 years ago my 9.9 Yamaha kicker was stolen. Insurance replaced it with a mercury kicker. When I saw it was identical (except for the color) and even sounded the same, I asked the dealer and he confirmed that Yamaha was supplying the engine for Mercury.

Google it.... I believe the relationship lasted till at least 2004.

Tohatsu makes outboards 20 hp and less for Mercury and Nissan in addition to their own.

Yamaha did make powerheads for Mercury. There was a bitter challenge under NAFTA/WTO because Merc accused Yamaha of "dumping" their outboards in the US for x% under market. Yamaha's response was to raise the price of their powerheads by x%. Merc then sued Yamaha for breach of contract. Another typical win-win in international trade with the US.

Tohatsu are Korean I think....my vote was for a Yamaha. I have a 9.9 Honda and it is a slug... If that's the case your honda need's a tune up, if it's really that bad I'll come and pick it up for a box of suds.
