Ive had a few honda 9.9's. they have been very reliable a d good on gas, other than the carbs are very sensitive. I have not owned a another brand. Next time I buy , I might look at Suzuki. Looking forward to hearing other opinions.

I think they are all pretty good now adays.
I just happen to have a 1997 - 4 stroke 8hp Evinrude because that's all I could find used.
Starts reliably every year. It's 87 lbs.
Pushes my 18' jet boat around no problem. Strong enough to get off a lake in a storm.
GPS'd my boat at 10km/hour with that little kicker (as any 8hp would likely do).

Yamaha is by far the best. we used them at the lodge where i worked and would never have any problems with them. the one year we used merc we had problems with three out of 50 boats. went back to yamaha and never a problem since.
Although tohatsu has been really good for me for 15 years or more. Really bulletproof motor. Mine is a two stroke though

if you're buying new I don't think you can go wrong with #1-5, they're all pretty good...if you're buying used look for 2000 or newer, that seems to be the year when most/all manufacturers upgraded from pin drive props, and there are a lot more prop options available

I have a 97 Honda 8hp, 4 stroke, very reliable, my only issue is aftermarket props, I can't find many pitch options, ie higher thrust for trolling....my next kicker will be a yammy t8 or another honda

if it's a kicker motor, try to get one with an alternator to keep your main fully charged

I hear that Honda is horrible for getting parts for older motors. Merc and yamaha are the best in my opinion.

dads had issues getting his 2013 merc 4 stroke 9.9 started. once started it runs fine, but its a beast to get going.

i'd go yamaha

My 1996 honda 2 hp has been easy to buy and find parts because I've never one changed a thing not even the impeller. Still pumps water awesome.

I ordered a 9.9hp mercury from inlet marine. Im a Honda fan but it would have cost me $1300 for a honda and an extra $800 for a Yamaha.
