hello all, i have a question and i was wondering if someone could help me. my wifes step mom is having her 70th birthday in early october and well if i'm going to be in the kootanys during elk season i might as well hunt them. i was wondering if they would be rutting during this time. we will be staying near golden for the first 10 days of october.

Some of the unbred cows will be coming back into estrus around then, so chances of bulls moving should be good......some great elk hunting into October.

They are still rutting in October but its different. They call but don't come in usually. I find you have to intercept. It helps to have them dialed in already but it is doable. A lot of legal bulls are already gone but sometimes the odd big guy shows up from some crack in the side of an over looked mountain. Takes a bit of time to get them dialed in or some good old fashioned luck.

Last year in MU 4-25, we had bulls bugling and responding to calls until we left on Thanksgiving weekend.

Early October is some of the best time to be hunting elk. You should be able to get it done over the course of 10 days.

X2 but the meat will be a lot tougher as the breeders will be worn down.
