Is it going to be a kicker for a big boat or the sole engine on a smaller one? I have a 9.9hp yamaha as a kicker on a 26' smoker craft. Beauty little engine. Super quiet and starts up and runs great at those high elevation lakes.

IMO , Yamaha , mercury, or Honda .... everything else is a step down in quality . stay away from the cheap made in china brands .... ie coleman and parson

I have owned older mercs and they have been rock solid, id recommend a merc or yamaha.

I have a 1965 merc 9.9 that runs but needs a water pump impeller and a fuel pump rebuild. Should be a strong runner if your interested in a project. $100 picked up in westbank.

its for my 12ft aluminum. also would you recommend a 9.9hp or would a 6hp be plenty.

Yamaha for sure. Size depends on where you plan to use it, how much weight you will have in the boat and how fast you want to get somewhere.

By the time you get your gear and a buddy in the 12 foot a 6 hp will be underpowered, especially if you have to fight a wind or a current. I don't think anyone ever looks back and says "I should have bought a smaller one".

I use a 5 hp merc with my 12' alum Harbourcraft .... no complaints even with 2 other fairly large fishing buds ...

true but, all my gear and 2 people i never had a problem on lakes in the lower mainland with wind using my 2hp honda. only at a slow troll speed but as soon as i gave her we were good

stick with a 9.9... they are the most common size out there for small boats and kicker motors so in the future u will have no problems finding parts or maintenance items compared to a 6hp IMHO....

Honda as I have a 15 on a 16' smoker craft but a 9 is sure gonna be plenty on a 12' boat.

YAMAHA 9.9 for your 12 ft-er - I have a 6 hp on my flat bottom 11 ft flyfisher boat and a 15 hp on my 14 ft G3 boat - JMO  RJ

Have a 5hp Honda outboard. Runs like a dream, and sips fuel. Used to have Honda generators, 2000 watt and 3000 watt. Sold them and bought two, 2000 watt Yamahas. My personal feeling is that the Honda motor is better than the Yamahas. Seemed to start easier and run more smoothly and had more reserve for heavier loads. Have both Honda and Yamaha quads and feel the same way with them. IMHO you cannot go wrong with the reliability, durability and resale value of a Honda.

I have a 8 horse merc on my 12 and it goes good but with 2 guys and gear it will not get on a plain. go for a 9.9.

Go for 9.9 Merc but I'm sure there's other makes just as good. The power when you need it, easy on fuel and will idle down to slow troll. Let's put it this way, you see a storm coming, time to get out out Dodge, WHAT do want to get of the water.

Well... with my 13 ft inflatable I started with a 40hp but actually wished I would have bought a smaller one because it was a total bear to put on and take off by myself. Have a 30 hp now and it is easy to put on and off and I am very nicely powered.

Check the spec. plate on the transom of the boat. It will tell the size of the Max. HP for the boat. Some are maxed out at 7.5 and the beamier boats like my Sears and others are rated for 15 HP. Good idea to not go over the rated HP.

I'm looking for a 2stroke 15hp for my 12'zodiac,considerations are simplicity, reliability and portability.not sure whether to go new or used.

I bought an older model precisely because they are much simpler. I think they are lighter too. Plenty on craigslist that were stored for a number of years.

Suzuki makes a nice 4-stroke as well guys... I have a 20hp on my 14', runs like a dream, was worried it would be to much, but sure is nice to have the power (same weight and size as a 15hp). Their 9.9hp is a great motor as well, I believe they are the lightest out there?

I'd get a Honda 15 HP. Same wight as a 9.9.

When I was a kid I had a 15hp on a 12', it was perfect. Now I run a 30hp on a 14' and find it a little underpowered.

Depends a lot on you boat too though, there's some boats that can't handle or shouldn't have much power on the back of them.

Same here. 8 horse Yamaha on a 14 foot aluminum. Can plane with 2 guys but 3 not a chance.

Im pretty sure the 15hp weigh the same because it is the same motor as a 9.9 but the 9.9 has a detuned carb.

My dad and I run a 6hp 4stroke yamaha on our 10.5ft Jon Boat, we have the fuel tank at the front of the boat for weight distribution, Also on the 6hp yamaha all you need to do is change out the carb to a bigger one and you will get 8hp out of it but you really don't need it

Since you aren't running a Jon you should be fine with weight distribution as you are also running a 12ft boat, 6 will do just fine but a 9.9 will give you that little bit more umph, your call

Id go with a Yamaha or Mercury 4stroke

Always could blow my buddy's boat out of the water.. Same boats and motors.. So he thought.. Mine had a 15hp with a 9.9 decal on it.. Being a 9.9 meant no need to register boat... Always made it out to the hotspot First and First beer back in camp...
