Last year nap , smoothbor and myself went on a great grizz hunt. Smoothbor spotted the only grizz of the trip but after a nearly 2 hour stalk the wind shifted and the beautiful big blonde grizz made a getaway.
This year Smoothbor couldn't make so Nap and I invited Pete K and Noahdawg to come on the adventure. Tags were secured and the last week of may we made the long trip into an area I know well. Pete K took a great blonde 7'1" boar and Noahdawg got a huge 8' boar with a massive head. We passed up 3-4 bears and saw a total of 7! Moose , caribou and porcupines entertained us while looking for the great bears. Out timing was great as green grass was appearing and hunting was good. We covered lots of miles by truck, boat, foot and had a great time. We had hunting light till 10pm and used it all. Here are some pics of our adventure.

Those are some sweet looking grizzlies. Way to go on all having a great trip. And to drink bone beer to. It is all about having a good time with the fellow hunters.
Now did any of you guys get stuck in the snow or do any face plants in the snow?

We had good action on a regular basis. On the drive in we were a few km short of reaching camp when we saw our first bear. Noahdawg was ridin shotgun when we rounded a bend in the road. Grizz!! he was about 400m ahead and going the same direction we were. He hadn't spotted us so I backed the truck up out of sight and took off after him. I was doing my best imitation of someone who could actually run, trying to close the distance and judge the bear. I got to about 300m from him and he was moving away fast, almost ready to disappear around a corner. I dropped prone and got the rifle on him. I didn't have my predator call on me so I did my best vocal impression of a calf moose in distress. It worked and the bear stopped turning broadside. Problem was I could only see the top of his head and his hump. The 300m crosshair settled on his hump and I took up the slack in the trigger. I still wasn't sure if he was a 7' plus bear and hesitated. He turned and disappeared. The wind shifted at that moment and the jig was up. Noahdawg had been watching the whole thing with his binos. When I got to him He said that was a good bear and he was waiting for the shot to ring out. It was a good start to the hunt.

I was able to sneak away for a little solo time one evening and hit my favorite river bottom in the area. I wasn't too far into the area when I spotted the unmistakable shimmer of a silvertips coat shining in the late afternoon sun. He was in tall willows and moving quickly. I saw a vantage point close by that would give me a better view. I set up prone across my pack and glassed for the bear. I was about 400m away and couldn't find him. I hustled 200m further to another patch of pines and took a standing rest against a tree. I just started to glass when he appeared in an opening and stopped. I sized him up in the crosshairs and guessed him at 6' and maybe change. I held off trying to make him bigger. He moved off and I went after him to get a better look. I never found that bear again. I tried predator calling him out but got no response. It was about an hour long encounter where I saw the bear for perhaps 2 minutes. It was exciting and I was having the time of my life.

That would have being VERY EXCITING :-D - got the old heart pumping i bet ! RJ

Looks like you guys made it all the way to Thutade Lake. The campsite looks pretty clean. Usually it's a garbage dump after the fall hunters leave. Even took time to go to Cascadero Falls.

How was the road? Did they get it cleared and fixed enough that you had no big problems?
I heard the there were some pretty soft spots on the road.

Congrats on a good hunt!

You bet we made it to the lake, best place to camp, the camp was in pretty good shape and we left it better than we got there. Pete and I walked into Cascadero Falls and glad we did. It is pretty cool. As for the road, not bad shape at all. One flat on the trailer going in, lost one tail light and that was it. We all had a great time and by far the best way to start a new year of hunting.

Don't worry Smoothbor, I will be on my toes. Swampthing did bust his butt, but you and I both know he is second to none in the mountains. Looking forward already for the 3 of us heading up those slides!!!!!

Thinking back ya must of been laughing!!!

I was cursing!! We had to move!! Peeking out of the slide alder and seeing that big boar right where we needed him to be made that a stalk that I will never forget. A few pretty intense minutes followed that. I had a rush of fear overcome me for a few seconds there that I have rarely felt while hunting. That's a drug you cant buy on the street.

Here is the video. Rough cut. Available up to 1080p.
The jet boat sequences are a bit noisy because of the wind in the small mic.
Overall a real fantastic hunt. Lots of laughs. Covered a lot of ground and kept busy.
