Reg 4 Black Bear

I haven't posted much in terms on my hunts lately, but I'll share this one in hopes to stir others to get out there before the spring season ends and share also.

Me and some friends spent a few days in some areas in Reg 4 looking for blackies since we didn't draw any grizz tags. 3 Bears were harvested during this time including mine below.

In 4 days of hunting we have seen about 45 black bears including sows and cubs and we passed on many. On the last day of our hunt, I was still empty handed and I didn't really mind considering the two nice bears already harvested and all that we've seen and done during the trip.

We were driving to camp to tear down and head back when I spotted this guy. It didn't take me long to figure he was a shooter, but he wasn't sticking around. My friend barked at it which caused this boar to stop long enough for one shot of the 30-06 and he was down. Hams, peperonni, and a tanned hide & skull in the making.

Nice bear and thx for the inspiration. I'm going out with the dog in the morning with great anticipation . First and only spring bear hunt this year. I can't wait to get to the mountains and smell the crisp clean air and if I'm lucky , bring home a bear to share.

Sorry for the Hi Jack in advance, but I'm new to bear hunting and have a somewhat simple question.

If I harvested a black bear this late in the spring season would it be worth getting a rug made of it? Or are their coats pretty slim and mangy by now? I have seen some very large black bears in some remote areas I work in and from a distance they seemed like they would make a large rug.

Would it be better to wait for fall if I want a bear with a quality coat? There is still snow covering 30% of the area I'm planning on hunting and it snowed last week here. We have seen a few +25 days but for the most part it's been a cool spring. Maybe their coats would still be somewhat full?

Any input would be great thanks!
