Well guys just on my way home from a great 4 day hunt with my hunting buddy Alex, Mattmcgiver from the forum, and a young buck friend of my family who has never hunted but wants to get into it. We hit an area that Alex and I tried out last year which ended when we just missed connecting on a beauty cinnamon coloured bear.

This time around we concentrated on one general area and did a lot of hiking and glassing. The first night we spotted a young looking bear that took off once I started my stalk.

The next morning we went back to the same spot and were winded first by a big black, and then not 5 minutes later were busted by a nice looking colour phase. Seemed like we forgot our horseshoes at home! Spent the rest of the afternoon glassing and hiking to no avail.

On our way back to camp with a n hour of light left, a bear darted out of a meadow in front of our vehicle. He gave us the slip up a game trail and over a small ridge into a ravine. We figured at that point we were done for the evening.

5 minutes down the road, I glanced to my left and saw a big black blob at the edge of the foresWhat are you thinking with the skull? Got something special planned?t in a small meadow BEAR!!! I shouted. Alex and I piled out of the vehicle and tried to close the distance. This bear must have been the king of the valley because he didn't care at all that we were closing on him. He turned around and leisurely made his way up the side of the hill through a maze of windfalls. I spotted him through a gap in the trees about 80 yards ahead and placed my reticle on his shoulder but there were branches in the way. I dropped the muzzle and jogged up the hill, leaping over logs as I went, Alex was 20 yards to my left doing the same. I closed the distance to 50 yards as the bear stopped in a grove of alders. He looked down the hill and voiced his displeasure by emitting a low growl. I snapped the scope up to my eye and got a clear picture of his shoulder. I breathed slowly as Alex whispered that I needed to shoot right now. I squeezed the trigger and my Savage 111 roared and spat a 180 gr .30-06 round towards the bear. Instantly through my scope I saw the bear jump as the bullet impacted his shoulder. He rolled down the hill before jumping up and limping to the left. Alex lined him up to finish him off but he was down and we heard his death rattle within 10 seconds. Alex came over and gave me a high five as we stood and watched to make sure he wasn't playing possum. Matt and Dayton caught up a few seconds later, and 4 hours later we had him gutted and quartered and in the cooler.

We figured he was around 200-250, just over 6' and fairly old as he was scarred up with his ear split. His teeth were very worn with only his canines and a few back molars remaining.

edit: before anyone asks how long we watched for cubs, I have two words for you: Pink Lipstick.

SSS, he had a great full coat, but the top of his noggin looked like he had the catholic monk haircut. Big bald spot in the middle.

They seem to be pretty active now, all the bears I saw on the weekend were on valley floors in the afternoon/evening.
