View Full Version : Where to move to?

Pre '64

I'm in Nova Scotia and have a cousin in Kelowna. I've hunted for moose with him a couple times in BC and he is always nagging me to move to Kelowna and have been thinking about it since I just retired. I would sooner be in a smaller town so where would be the best place to move to, say within 2 hrs drive of kelowna? I would like to get away from the high house prices in kelowna too. Would sooner go north, east or west.

Thanks for any advice you have guys. (This is a great site)

Oh yeah, we're going out for a visit in a couple of weeks and are going to drive around and see a few places.

The Okanagan is a terrible place... Summer heat well into the 40's C, huge mosquitoes by the thousands, rattle snakes behind every tree, no deer whatsoever, winters so cold that the penguins fly south, the fishing bloooowwwss, oh and don't forget the seasonal huge influx of white and red license plates that come choke up our lakes and roads... ya the Okanagan prolly isn't the best place...

You might want to consider Logan Lake, we've been here for 10 years now.
It's a great little town , if you like peace and quiet, and great hunting and fishing out your back door.
If you get over this way look us up.

You'll probably like the Coldstream/Lumby area. East of the "big" highway but close to it and Vernon, Kelowna. The Monashees are a pretty place in the fall and some nice lakes and decent hunting. Easy shot to the east Kootenay's as well. But having grown up in that area and still having ties might make me a tad biased.

The responses are awesome guys. Pics were great too. I have two Golden retrievers that love grouse hunting. We are going to take a drive along the border into the kootenays at least as far as Creston to check that area out. If it wasn't for my wife I'd be have far more options, if you get my drift, but she has to be close to certain things. I'll be checking out most of the places mentioned, there were quite a few I hadn't heard of before. Will be leaving June 8 and coming back June 15.

i live just outside of Vernon and love it. but then I work hard to find good hiking/hunting spots where the tourists arn't Kelowna has turned into a giant douchy cesspool. If it's not Albertan Douche, it's meth teeth and neck tattoos, and that's just the women.

If you want to party with half of Surrey, just hit the Christian Valley in the fall ;)

Vernon has it's share of Albertan sled trash in the winter, but they're mostly out ruining the koots. In the summer they're THICK in the woods on the major FSRs, just follow the country music (should be a crime) and beer cans. There is a lot of backcountry in the area if you're willing to leave the motors at home and put some boots on the ground. Most hunters I see here seem to be glued to the seat of a quad or F150...

How about something more central with excellent hunting and fishing? check out Williams Lake, mild winters, warm dry summers, an abundance of fish and game all with in 15-60 minutes of town. Real estate prices are at an all time low, the Prosperity Mine project was refused again, but when it goes through, and it will eventually, just watch the prices soar. We have a large hospital, no problem getting a good doctor or dentist, lots of community services, crime is quite low, lots of stores and very friendly people. We even have an excellent gun store and a Sportsman club with a well maintained range, about 4 hours to the coast (Bella Coola) 6 hours into Van and about 4 hours to Kelowna, roads are very good and well looked after year round. We have been here for 7 years, both now retired and will be headed back to northern Alberta to be closer to the grand kids, we will miss the slower pace of life and the great climate and all the good friends we have made here, but we need to be closer to family. My neighbours moved here from Kelowna about 3 years ago to be closer to their grand kids, they are very happy here and would not go back to Kelowna under any circumstances, they remarked as to how quite it is here, the low crime rate and how friendly the locals are, check it out!

Salmon Arm is a good spot for retired types, good living and competitive prices for services and real estate.
Get a condo with no strata if possible or buy a small well kept house with a good roof. Two bedroom. Not many chores like a big yard and trees etc. You want to spend your time hunting and fishing and enjoying the beauty beaches on the lake. Not cutting lawn and trimming hedges all day, your retired not a slave to yard work.

The best part of this thread is there is very little mention of my town. I have travelled most all of BC except Bella Coola or Haida Gwai. I have spent lots of time in Lower Mainland, PG, Smithers, Terrace, Revelstoke, Vernon, Kelowna, Princeton, Dawson Creek, Ft St John, Chetwynd, Williams Lake to name a few. It's all really awesome for the outdoorsman. However when I chose a place to live year round, Kamloops suits my family and I best. Central and close driving to many other nice areas that I frequent. Kelowna 2 hrs. Revelstoke 2:15. Vancouver 3.5 hrs. Williams Lake 2.5 hrs. Shuswap, Vernon, Princeton all within an hour or 2. This town is still small enough for me at under 100,000 people. All the shopping the wives love and great hunting right here for us. Little word here of Kamloops, does it mean it's treasures are mostly unknown?

Of all I have seen in BC there are a few places that I would really not enjoy living. The Island anywhere, (f'n ferries) Lower Mainland anywhere, or Kelowna. Rest of BC? Man you can't really go wrong. All great places for the outdoorsman.

From what I saw on google maps I liked the West kelowna area, that's if I had had to be in kelowna. I'm trying to convince my wife that we should be in a smaller Town. We we get there I'm going to head North from Kelowna, go through all the areas mentioned as far as SA then to Kamloops, Williams Lake, and then turn back South towards Merritt, Princeton, Pentican and then over to EKs as far as Nelson at least and back again through route 33. This should give me a good idea and then maybe revisit the places we liked best.

Personally I would not pick any of the North Central communities. In the PG and surrounding area you will have to be fully equipped to handle the snow which comes in October/November and does not leave till March. This past year was especially bad with snow to four feet in some areas. However if you have a 4x4 truck, snowmobile, quad and snowblower you will do just fine. But if you are looking to relax in your retirement years the better choice would be a bit farther south.

My wife and I spent two weeks in BC in June. Stayed at my cousins place in Kelowna. He drove us up through Armstrong, Lumby, Vernon Saalmon Arm, then back through Kamloops. A guy showed me a picture on his phone of a bunch of rams near Kamloops. He took the picture from the railroad tracks and said there were no roads nearby(he works for CN).

We took my cousin's car south to okanagan Falls, Ram something development which I really liked there. Then east all the way to Cranbrook. My wife and I realy liked Creston, stayed at the Ramada there. We hiked at Cranbrook along the river. Back to Creston to Kaslo, stayed there overnight, then to New Denver, and kept on route 6 to Vernon. I have to say the EK is the place for me, but we never really saw a place we didn't like, except maybe Osoyoos. Salmon Arm would be high on our list too. Just have to get the old farm ready to sell. I could be ready to go in a year.

We had a great trip, liked the people we met, esp in the smaller places they were very friendly and helpfull. I liked New Denver for some reason, very small but I talked to one old guy in a grocery store and he said the hunting was great there. Too far from civilization for my wife.

For you, Little Shuswap Lake. Shuswap Lake 15 minutes away, to the boat launch. Where I live, we have our own private beach and boat launch. Every property in the Estates, which are all freehold including the private beach, is a vested owner. Then there is Adams Lake, one of the best kept secrets in BC, oops, now it isn't. Then there are a bunch of little lakes to keep you interested year round. I won't mention their names because although they are known, I don't want to start a stampede.
Hunting includes mule and whitetail deer and moose too as the primary critters of choice. Oh, and black bear too. Mountain goat hunting not too far away.
Moderate climate, a little more snow than Kamloops. You won't bust your balls shovelling like some places not too far away.
Although Kamloops is north of Kelowna, it's climate is more like Penticton. There is a difference between Kelowna and Penticton. Kelowna gets more snow in the winter, believe it or not.
I think you would like Chase, google earth it and go to street view. Cruise the town from the comforts of your arm chair and see what Chase has to offer. Be sure to get on to Cummings Street for a real good view of Little Shuswap Lake and Centennial Park.
I forgot to mention, housing prices are quite affordable.

Well, the sun doesn't set in Chase on November 17th and rise on February 23rd like BB.
And the snow isn't balls deep either.
Admittedly, the train does go through the middle of town, similar to Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Ashcroft, Kamloops and many other places.
Did I mention that there is no need to clear the roads of no snow in BB? There are no Albertans there in the winter which equates to no traffic; therefore no need to plow :-D.
