I'd go 30-06 also of the three mentioned. Heavier bullets, readily available ammo, can shoot at decent distances also. That's why they've been around for so long.

I've used all 3, they all work. I'd take the 270 or 30-06

270? come on them little bullets will bounce off a bear

Is the 270 really that much smaller? I'm a beginner, and researched both 30-06 and 270 before buying my first rifle - ended up going for the 270 because the flatter trajectory and lower recoil seemed like a better gun for a greenhorn. I felt that the weakest link in the chain in my own situation was going to be the shooter, not the bullet or the gun so whatever I could do to help my shot placement would be to my advantage.

I've not been hunting bears, only ever shot a mule deer with my rifle. Don't know all that much about guns, compared to a lot of you guys, but if I put a 30-06 and a 270 cartridge side by side there doesn't seem like a drastic difference in size to me. I can buy 270 bullets in 180 grain, which I was planning to use for Moose if I get the chance to put the crosshairs on one. Is a 270 bullet going to be significantly less hard-hitting than a 30-06, assuming both bullets are say 180 grain?

Sorry to derail the thread, I know it was about bears, I'm just interested because I want to know more about the caliber I have and its capabilities.

.270 is simply a necked down (read - smaller diameter bullet) 30-06 case. This is how the .270 was created, its parent case is the 30-06. The 30-06 is of .308 diameter which is the diameter for most anything with a .30 (including the 30-30 and of course, the .30-06 ).

.270 is, well, .270! In short - the only difference between the 30-06 and .270 is .038 of an inch. Balistically, this is a BIG difference. .270 loses its character and appeal to many shooters when the bullet weights get heavier due to increases in bullet length required to obtain that weight vs. the bullet of a 30-06.

As per the original question - .729-ish SLUG.

Now for you alo - Hunt what you can, where you are with what you've got. If you have all three of the calibres mentioned handy then I advise to simply take what most interests you on the day, what you shoot most accurately or got the best deal of shells on. It really doesn't matter provided that shot placement you've mentioned is on point and you are within your effective range.

Bartell is kidding, your 270 with 150 grain bullets will kill any black bear and I wouldn't hesitate on Moose with the same.

30-30 because lever actions are sweet.

serious answer: 270, for me. I seem to like the calibre better then the 30-06...
