Does anyone have any info on how to fish for squid? I want to try in the Kitimat-Prince Rupert area, are there any areas that I should try?

Brightly lit docks at night.. Jig or Rake them...

When I lived in SA - the "chokka industry" (squid industry) was known as white gold.

Boats would go out into the ocean at night and turn on high intensity lights (like you have a sport stadiums) the lights would draw the squid in, then using hand lines and jigs they would simply snag the squid as they attacked the jigs.

Make no mistake it was a dirty job - ink squirting everywhere, but it was like printing money.

Did it in Bamfield under the bright lights of the government dock. Used a squid jig plus a few extra treble hooks further up the line. The herring rake worked well when they got closer to the dock.

They were using a small seine in Barkly Sound for squid. I believe it was about 40 fathoms long and 20-30 ft deep. They would hang a light bulb off the side of the boat (at night of course) and let the squid gather to the light. Then using a skiff, tow the seine out and around the gathered squid back to the boat. Purse up and you have your squid. If you don't have a seine just use a jig under the light!! Have fun!!

We used to squid jig all the time as kids growing up on the island. Government dock at night, grab dad's job site lights and the trout rod with the above pictured jigs. (sometimes just half of a trout rod even) We would catch an ice cream bucket full each night (like 11pm-12:30amish). It was lots of fun and made the best calamari. Of course it wasn't legal because we were pit lambing, but that didn't matter because we didn't bother with fishing licenses either!
Ah yes… The good ol days...
