As the title states, this was more of a harvest than a hunt. I headed out towards Babine with my friend yesterday afternoon, casually looking for bears and rabbits as well as casting the trout rod at various lake along the way. I had told Dan that I was looking for a 200lb meat bear and that is just what we found on the side of the road, I shot it with the trusty .300 99 Savage lever rifle and it dropped in its tracks, shot it with the .22 behind the ear just to make sure. We wrestled it into the back of the truck and drove to a nice creek to work on it and did the gutless method.

here it is after we pulled off the 1st side

After it was in the game bags we hit the road and I came home and started cutting. Pulled the trigger at about 7pm and it was boneless and bagged in the freezer by 11pm. Embarrassingly easy.

I am about to get really busy with work so I am very happy to be able to get a nice spring bear in the freezer. It was a young boar, the ideal animal for me to take.

And to all the trophy hunters that snicker at a nice little meat bear I respectfully say...burp.

Great job. I'm have the same thinking as you. I'm going for the meat. A young - middle age Boar is perfect for me too. I keep telling myself I want to get 6.5 footer but keep shooting 5 - 5.5 footers LOL.

What are you getting done with the meat?

Yup, the .300 is a beauty. My dad bought it new when he was 16. I guess im not very tough but I shoot the smaller calibers so much better. I have a "new to me" .270 that I got off another forum member and feel guilty for not trying it out on this bear but I just went with my gut. Think this bear will be smokies, garlic coil and fresh sausage of some sort.

Nice work!

I have to compliment you on the photo too (maybe I have to compliment the guy holding the camera). Nicely framed and a great perspective from such a low angle.
