I got my spring bear yesterday. I will call this one my birthday bear as it was only 1 day off. My bear season started last week when I went up to my bear spot Wednesday. It was still a little early, just starting to turn green with little new growth yet.( the area I bear hunt is around 4000+ feet ) Found one small set of tracks and one pile of scat, so it was showing signs of activity starting. But needed another week or two.

Went back up yesterday and got there around 3:30 pm thats right pm. I never waist my whole day up there lol This places produces in the mid - late afternoon and I was still thinking it might be to early and wasn't to eager to get up there. Unloaded the quad slowly cruised the pipeline to the area I saw sign in a week before. This time there was bear scat every 10 - 15 yards. That got me excited. Cruised down a bit further and over the next hill and there was a big black ball in the middle of the green grass. He was 345 yards away according to my range finder. So off I went to close the gap. There was little cover for the first 150 yards as it was thick blow down along the pipeline and I'm sure he would have heard me. So I just crouched down and walked closer when he wasn't looking. Then the bush opened up and I snuck in. Got to the edge of the bush and the clearing and ranged him a 48 yards and set up for him to turn broad side. A couple minutes later one 200gr TSX through the shoulders did the job. It just hammered him. He hit the ground jumped up and rolled I put one more in him for insurance because there was a deep ravine where he was rolling to. But he was done. I didn't measure him but I would guess he was about 5'6" nose to tail

I recovered the bullet poking through the hide It was a 200gr TSX from my 325wsm moving at 2950 fps it only retained 131.7gr but did the job very well

Nice bear, surprised he caught a barnes bullet, and it lost 35% of its weight. Bullet failure? Obviously not completely cause you got a nice bruin, but for a company that advertises 99% bullet retention, thats really really surprising. How far was the shot? Broadside?

I was very surprised to find it as well. It was a broad side shot at 45-50 yards with a muzzle velocity of 2950 fps through both shoulders. But he's not a big bear. It looks like it over expanded and the peddles fell off as I found one of them next to the bullet. I would say it is technically bullet failure but I will take a over expanding TSX over a under expanded

thats crazy 35% loss on a tsx, i have wieghed lots that are shot into a gravel pile and they all retained 95% or better.

Send it to Barnes. Maybe you'll get some free ammo?

(Congrats on the bear, too!)

It might be worth a try. lol I'm not to worried about it. If it was a under expanded bullet I would in a heart beat.

I had that happen on a bear a couple years ago too, petals sheared off a TSX. same thing though, really close range.

That bullet should have expanded more anyways if the petals hadn't sheared off it would have expanded more

Congrats on the bear. That isn't uncommon for that to happen to a TSX especially at high speed and is much more desirable than not opening up. I have seen the same with the 130 gr TSX from a 264 Win Mag, opening up fast and having the petals shear off. It also appears from the shape of the expanded bullet that it tumbled which also isn't uncommon, that will also decrease penetration.

The bullet overexpanded due to the short range. Simple math,,,too fast for the range =high impact velocity.
I have read many times that 2300 to 2400 is the best impact velocity for the Barnes bullets. Thus you must be farther away than 50 yards. Still it did the job quite well, didnt it. I smacked a goat with a 225gr TTSX at 2900fps muzzle velocity from my 330, and at 285 yards the bullet would be slowed down to 24-2500fps,,,( which is the distance I shot him at)it broke both shoulders and exited,,,dont know what it weighed,,dont care,,bang--flop

Barnes deliberately softened the front end to make sure it would open up better. Losing the petals doesn't really matter much in fact a company that makes Cutting Edge Bullets designed a bullet that purposely does that and opens up a big wound channel

Funny thing is a few months ago some Barnes fans were slamming the Partition design for losing the front end and here the Barnes does the same thing. Both are a good design and I will continue to use them :) (along with a bunch or others)

Here is a better picture to how they work.....

^^ I have no issue with how the bullet performed. I found one of the petals next to the bullet so they almost traveled the whole distance. That's also why it hammered him so hard, literately knocked him 4-5 feet over broadside on the ground as he sucked up all that energy. Also almost no meat damage on the exit shoulder.

And I agree with .330 Dakota shooting him @ close to 3000fps at the muzzle @ 45 yards hitting bone, I don't care how good the bullet is I expect a little more dramatic expansion than say 100 or 200 yards. lol.

Performed way better than the 200gr Accubond I shot a buck with @ 50-60 yards. That was like a bomb went off inside, wasted a lot of meat. Great bullet with some distance but not good up close with those speeds.
