1. Where is the best place to buy salt ice between Victoria and Renfrew?

2. Is there only 1 place to launch in Renfrew (in the river) and can you get from the river to open water if the tide is out?

their is three boat launches. on is in the new marina up town on your way to botanical beach its a steep hill to drive down though. the others you have to watch the tides cause you will hit if the river is to low. what is salt ice never heard of anyone buying it?

I've never heard of salt ice either, just asking for a buddy who swears by it. Says it lasts longer or something.

I would think that salt ice is just that... a salty brine frozen solid. Salty water freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water thus it would be colder and hold its freeze longer. Any ice wrapped in newspaper will hold its freeze longer too. Trick is too fill freezer/cooler with whatever so that there is no air moving.

It is shaved or chewed up finely and lasts a long time. Used it in Tahsis, Port Hardy, Ucelulet, and Bella Coola. Load up a big cooler and it keeps the fish cold for a week, not like regular ice cubes.

The only place that I know of to buy salt ice in Victoria is Salish straits seafood. Located on the reserve off of Mt. Newton on the east side of the hiway. Nice and close if coming off the ferry. www.salishstraitseafoods.ca. Salt ice is the best is for packing fish, lasts way longer.

No salt ice in Sooke. You typically have to find a commercial fish packer.

If you go to launch and run out the river make sure you got an extra prop.... i do not go out there, dads boat is in Sooke.. but i work with some guys that do Renfrew and say the river can be hard on props,, with logs and bars etc... so,,, not my experiance, but if i was to go id bring an extra prop.
