I will be traveling to Alta in the next couple months to fly fish for pike. Some of those lakes hold some rather big white fish and although I have tagged the odd small one over the years while fishing for other things, I am curious if anyone targets them and and how much different the presentation is than trout. Need to tick a big white fish off the bucket list.

thanks

wire worms, blood worms, micro leach and small nymphs under an indicator is how I caught them in southern Alberta

Golden stone nymphs have worked well for me in the past

Try a black chironomid with white ribbing. Size 12, 14, 16. I take it you will be stream fishing so look for fast moving shallow water as it slow into a pooled area.

I had a lot of success throwing just about any beaded nymph pattern. Also had a blast throwing black gnats on top. That was all in the Peace and most were around the one pound range. Also caught them on rolled muddlers. So from my experience try anything they seem to eat whatever they can get whenever they can. I tossed a prince under an indicator on Jan 1/13 and was catching them.

Thanks for the help, will give it a try, actually looking for big lake whities, and will pitch a few streamers for northerns while I'm at it.

What lake?

The flies I suggested are for lake whites
