So last evening my wife and I were sitting relaxing after dinner and she mentions that she thinks she had better learn about the guns we have in the safes. This comes out of left field as she has never expressed anything more than a passing interest in my hobby or hunting. Our sons, age 5 and 8, are gung ho.So tells me she wants to learn about them, how they work and how to be safe with them. I said no problem, come to the range and I'll show you what I've learned. She replied she didn't want me to teach her, that she wanted to take a course or lessons from someone else. I replied, "No problem, I'll look into it and let you know what I can find." So here is my problem - I need a course on long guns (no restricteds in the house) that she can take that will fulfill her need to take control of her learning. I've looked into the BOW course offered by the BCWF - it looks good, but I don't think she will want to go away for a weekend to take a course in which she is a complete novice. I might suggest she take the CFSC but I'm not sure she'll enjoy sitting with "knowledgable" manly men. Does anybody know of an instructor who schedule courses for women only? Any other creative ideas on how to get her the information she wants?
Any help would be appreciated!

Why not start with the CFSC since she'll need PAL to fully take advantage of her new knowledge? I know when I did the course many years ago, there were lots of complete newbs there, and very friendly environment.

My wife took an interest this spring too, and wanted me to teach her so she could challenge the tests (CORE and CFSC). I wouldn't hear of it, but would love to pay for her to take the courses, and she's waiting for the next course at our local club. Something about teaching one's spouse spells trouble to me.

Kent Archibald in Cloverdale, you will not find a more thorough caring instructor than him. He runs CFSC courses Saturday and Sunday every week, and has at least one female in the classroom 80% of the time. His wife Karen is also an instructor and she helps with the testing.

I took my courses with Kent; I have sent him an e-mail to ask if he is able to put on a Ladies only course. They are good people.

Id recommend taking the PAL course with someone who does a 3 or 4 day class on it, to start.

i took the CFSC with Silvercore in January, there were at least 50% of girls there, many with no experience with guns and no interest in guns either, e.g. just taking the course as part of training for a job like airport immigration. So your wife is ahead of the game already :-)

My son just took the course and there was a woman and her nine year old daughter in the course. I don't think she should feel intimidated, and she'll have no problem. I once talked to an instructor and he said he would much rather teach women as they come with no preconcieved notions and listen and learn .

She's leaving and wants to know their value.....

Kidding, great to hear when people take up new interests. The PAL course is a great learning tool for beginners.

Let's face it, I cross her every damn day, but, after 27 years, she's gotten a pretty thick hide...

Becoming an outdoor woman (BOW) is a great weekend for her (and her friends) to take in all things outdoors. Rifle/Pistol/Trap/Archery Shooting will be covered among others such as outdoor survival, outdoor cooking, powersaw/axe safety, and much, much more. Located in Lake country this year you couldn't ask for a better venue.
