View Full Version : Tenting on ice?

I'm heading out in the morning for a 3 day fishing trip. Question is this... have you ever or would you set up a tent on lake ice? I'm considering it if I can't find a decent spot on land. I'm unsure of any potential spots to set up where I'm heading. And 4 feet of snow doesn't help. Ice thickness would be 24" at a minimum, probably cloer to 36" :| Would you do it? Have you done it?

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it as long as you knew it was going to stay below zero.

It's supposed to be -10 at the lowest and +6 during the day at the highest. Don't worry, the ice isn't gonna melt anytime soon in this country :) I figure if I shovel down to the ice surface, lay down a groundsheet and set up, I will be fine?

Why dont you drive your truck on the ice and sleep in it.I wouldnt want to be in a tent with no cover when the wind starts howling.:|

If the wind picks up you probably won't have much fun. And it's hard to keep a fire going when it's melting through the ice. You'd be much better off if you could find a sheltered spot surrounded by trees. It'll keep the wind off you and you'll be able to keep a fire going. John

I would rather stay on land but if I did pitch on ice it would be right beside shore so I could have the fire on land.

Listen to this guy Tinney. I'd figure you would want to off the ice for sleeping. Get into the trees, you'll be sheltered, easy access of fire wood, and might be warmer for bed becuase of the fact your not sleeping on frozen water.

Set up in the bush. Clear a crater under a tree and pile up the spruce boughs.

Set up a fire pit! Warmer than a tent.

i'd avoid tenting on the ice.......but, if its as thick as you say, you have nothing to worry about in regards to the ice itself,(as long as it isnt rotten) try and figure out the wind direction, if its coming the same direction all the time and you can get into a cove of some sort with a bit of a wind break, then youre set, and you'll be hardpressed to find as level a surface as the lake ice. if youre feeling really dumb, bring an air mattress, boy does that insulate!  (speaking from experience....) for a hike in trip of that length (1 km) nothing beats throwing a 5 dollar home depo sheet of styrofoam insulation down in regards to having the chill creeping into your back(cumbersome and stiff and you'll probably break it into several pieces though) you cant beat real wool, and a thermarest mattress is pretty decent too.
my 2cents imho

I have a thermarest. People tent without them? Gah, I love mine. Lightweight and super soft.

I have a question about cold weather camping. What kind of gas do you use? I have always used white gas, but it would be realy nice to get away from the pumping and re-fueling if some thing else worked as well.

Tinney
02-19-2007, 11:26 PM
Spruce gas  When I buy a stove, I will buy an MSR white gas stove. They are the best IMO

Hagen

propane has worked fine for me down to around -15 or so, after that i always use white gas, never had an issue with white gas

Here is a good read for you if you intend to camp out on the ice for 2-3 days exposed to the elements. It's a true story by Farley Mowat, called "Death on the Ice".
Camping on land in a sheltered area is by far the preferred choice regardless of the depth of snow. I'm assuming if the snow is 4ft+ then you would be using snowshoes perhaps? Use them to compact the snow in your camping area, put down a generous layer of boughs cover with a tarp, pitch tent. Build a wall of cut fire wood in a semi circle, not to far away in front of tent. Put your fire pit at base of wall and your chair in between tent and wall. The wall of wood will do a couple of things for you, it will allow the wood to dry and it reflects heat back to you as the fire burns. Have fun!

I would camp on the ice with a tent ,just make sure you have a blow up 6 inch air mattress to put under you http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif hunter47.

Why don't you curl up with a Grizz in his den? Tell him you are innocent and have not put in for an LEH and he may let you stay?

He'll likely be a bit groggy anyhow, but don't stick around too long if the temps are going to be +6!! He may just get a bit frisky and think it's time to get up.

If the snow is that deep, build an igloo. They are pretty easy, and pretty fun to make.

Which is why his sig line on Ice Shanty is, and I quote, "I fish alone."

And the internet personality formerly known as PGKris I believe had a sig line something to do with the fact there is no companion so companionable as solitude. Seems he has come to terms with his popularity anyways:lol:
