A friend of mine got a Jet Boat a year ago and we have spent the last 11 months dreaming of when those areas would have an LEH so I think I almost fell out of my chair when I saw them in the paper. I'll be sticking a $100 in my envelope this year!

I'm hoping that masses of people do research and realize this is Boat access only before they put in entries so that those of us with a boat in the hunting party have better odds! Wouldn't that be shitty, someone gets the draw and when they realize that it is not accessible in their F350 and they cant step out use the hood as a gun rest they just decide not to bother.

I'm sure most will know its boat access, it will be like winning a big horn in Kamloops. 400:1 if we are lucky.

Finally! I have been wondering how much longer we would have to wait. It had been estimated that LEH might be available as soon as 6 years after re-introducing a herd there. That has long past. Hopefully some good success in there this year.

Your kidding Pitt Lake is boat access only..........thats horsehockey, why would they have a draw where you cant get to it

Well they better supply boats with those draws or it will be unfair to those that don't have a boat.

Now how far of a boat ride is it to these elk ? do we have to go in the saltchuck to get there ?

Im really curious how many people are gonna apply. We hunt those area and there is 0 pressure but im pretty sure those days are numbered as its beautiful up there and the cats outta the bag. Truth is if someone gets the draw there will be more then enough guys with jetboats that would probably go just for the experience.

How many have operated up there at that time of the year? It's not like it is during July Freshet. Skill and the right boat are necessary. Leave the 20' Custom Welds and Thunder jets at home.

Here's a look at what the levels are like from October on….

Every year that river takes boats… especially the ones "that my buddy just got last year"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF204yX1BR8

not my video… not my boat…. have no relation to pilot of boat in video

we normally go during hunting season up both pitt and stave . wouldn't take a big boat up the river but you can easily get them to the mouth or end of the lake landing and head up on dry land, but your right no white water winnibagos further up
nice video BTW

If I get the draw, I'll take my boat with quad and road hunt!

Yep boat and quad sure would be nice to hunt Elk close to home.

I was going to apply somewhere else, but because of you, I think I'll apply for this LEH. And I don't own a boat! It's posts like this that make me wonder why people even bother to make such a post. Why does someone need to go out of there way to shit on someone who is getting excited over a hunt? 100% negativity and completely unnecessary! Boo hoo! Please keep your whining to yourself and allow the rest of us to share in the excitement. There is plenty of opportunity to hunt elk in this province. Think of it this way, if 1000 people are putting in their first choice in this LEH, then that's a thousand less first pics everywhere else in BC. Now that's a bonus!

I agree . people should be excited about hunting especially in their backyard so to speak and as seeker said that's one less card filled out for another leah elk which is good for others.

Stave and Pitt elk leh is a win win for everyone even if you don't get drawn. looking forward to hearing how it goes for the hunters that get drawn (no im not putting in for there )

How many tags do the First Nations get?

This is a serious question

RiverRunner
03-26-2014, 05:06 PM
Like I said…. thats not my boat in the vid. I have no relation to that production. But that boat is a 14' Firefish piranha with a 175 sport jet. Full UHMW bottom.
It would be maxed out with 2 guys and an elk...

My personal boat is a 17.5" Wooldridge Alaskan with a 150 Johnson 2 stroke outboard jet. Typically a Pitt River run for me takes 100-120 litres of fuel.
I'd be pretty maxed with an Elk and 2 guys as well.
If I got a tag, I would organize a bigger boat to stay at the river mouth to be the supply barge and game ferry home.

I've seen the herd up there lots in the Summer months….. No big racks at that time of year….. and the animals themselves didn't seem too big…. yet.

Stave River is even skinnier. That would turn into a traditional hike and hunt pretty quick …...

Golden Ears Park Draft Management Plan: Elk Hunting?
Thought I should post this up. BC Parks is looking for your input regarding the possible uses of the park. With the Pitt river watershed transplants, and possible transplants into the Gold Creek watershed, I believe input from our side of things might go a long way to a possible hunting opportunity in the park itself. Page 9 touches on this.

Final day for submissions is Feb. 15.

I hope who ever gets the tag pulls a great elk out. A couple things are that the elk hang on private property( and close to yearly resident homes) on the lower river or go pretty high off the river. The cops also spend lots of time up there so make sure you have your insurance on your vehicle of choice and have all your other ducks in a row. When you get there don't just tie up anywhere on the dock, read the signs and use the outer dock. The upper pitt is actively logged and the roads are tight and twisty so keep your head up and respect the guys working, you might just not get to hunt where you want due to logging or hauling. I have been lucky enough to spend lots of time up there over the last 15 years and hunt it yearly but in the last 5 years the people have increased( not just hunters but hot springers too) and the beer cans and shot shell litter is getting bad, please respect this wonder of nature and the people who work and live there. The last point to remember is that the lake kicks up like the ocean and can get downright nasty, use a suitable boat. Good luck to the lucky person.

Good luck getting a jet boat up stave far enough where the herds hang out during the fall. They are a ways up there. Spent last fall up there heli logging.

its on the radar over at the Jet boating forum now….. guys are asking questions. Especially about the Stave. Its going to be busy with operators running during low conditions just to see how far they can go.

So does anyone know who got this draw? If so let me know as I'd be more than happy to help them out with the difficult task ahead of them ;) I'm willing to share 10 years of recon on this growing population. Hope they take me up on this, as it sure would be fun to see someone actually harvest a good bull out of here!

You don't need a boat. There is a water taxi service that can get you a truck or atv up there.
