Think I'll wait until the snow up here's only about 4 or 5 feet deep! Can't see Bears in 6 foot of snow!

Haven't seen much bear activity until closer to May. That being said, I am still going out to see what I can find in April :-)

I will keep sleeping till May

Bear hunting is easier once most of the bears come out of there dens.

Not interested in looking for the odd early insomniac bear

My hunting grounds are a 10 minute drive so I will be out early. Like to see the early grizz sign and keep tabs on the wolves, moose, elk, deer etc. I guess you could say I started scouting in november.

Still 3 feet of snow here. Going after a spring bruin as well.

Wooooo, there young feller, better pull back the reins a bit harder, unless you are using a hackamore.
Haha
Ive chased bears with dogs for the last 10yrs, most of the descent bears wont be pushing out they're plug until, late april-early may. 90% of the bears treed in april are young dinks, but there a exceptions to the rule.
I hope to see a couple nice bruins from your spring hunts.
Maybe a color phase, from the loops, ive seen tons.
Goodluck to ya, and may your gasoline bill stay low. :-$

how is the bear meat from an early April kill compared to a later one, e.g. early June once the bear had a chance to eat, run and get its metabolism going after hibernation?
is the hide easier to work with in Apr vs June vs fall because the bears have burned their fat during the winter?

Can't speak to the meat being better in early or later spring but many people say a bear eating salmon in the fall will not taste as good as a bear eating berries.

One advantage to a spring bear is the fur on the hide is often better due to the bear not having time to rub it off or having had much time to get into any/many fights yet. I don't know if spring or fall would have any effect on ease of working the hide but I doubt it. Fall bear would have more fat which might take a bit more work to get off the hide but not much more.

As long as hare season is still open, that's what I'm shooting. Come May, I'll get the .270 out and start looking for blackie.

I'm mostly going out on the 12th/13th just to look around and see what's going. I got cabin fever and javen't been outside since janruary... so yeah. Don't expwct to see much and probably won't touch the trigger. But whatever.
