With the cool thread 'Your other hobbies' in mind, I figure we should have a thread where everybody posts cool pics of ya doin your favorite winter-time bush hobbies.. so I'll start with some deep-in-the-woods snowshoein/rabbit-huntin shots..my other motivation to this thread is to post pics that hopefully depict how cool old-growth forests really are, as bush that is for the most part un-touched by mankind has got an awesomeness to it that can't be explained..let's hope the BC government leaves more of them alone!! Lots of rabbit tracks, but I don't think it's snowshoe. Mostly eastern cottontails.
Mountains between Skagit Valley and Chilliwack.

I'm up in whistler for work almost every day. The creek actually runs between whistler and blackcomb. The mountain is from the peak to peak.

I have been playing with my new iphone this winter. I'm impressed with the quality of pics a phone can produce. As for the snowshoes, I'm over 10 years of hard daily abuse on them. Quality is hard to come by these days. Most of the modern cheap stuff I could break in a matter of a couple of days of use.

Is the trail into the falls at Wells Grey fairly packed or r snowshoes a must right. Now?

The trails are packed down enough that snowshoes are not needed unless you have the desire to go off trail

Absolutely unreal pics..that's a big part of what BC is all about, natural untamed wilderness..including old-growth forests.. BTW, the MOE did get back to me, and yes they are committed to preserving a certain amount of old-growth forests everywhere in the province:-D

this was a pic I took early winter....it is a young Tom cougar track..just previous to taking this picture I had spent several minutes in tight with a few deer hoping that a buck was in there and inspite of good wind and being hid behind a tree these deer boogered on me....I walked a bit further along the ridge hopin for a peek and to my right I see snow fall off of some brush..what the???? oh shit what are you doing there???....we had a little discussion he was indifferent for a while but apparently I am a bit rude.... didn't appreciate sharing the mountain with him....he went on his way reluctantly..

Also like to get above treeline on many of my excursions. April 2016 with like minded folks climbing to the top of Mt. Alan Campbell east peak. Main peak approach was too sketchy. The final few meters were a boot pack for most of us, although several young keeners were determined to keep skis on to squeeze a few more turns in for the descent.

Don't want to derail the theme of this thread too much, but I'll share a couple of links showing my ski gear. I learned to telemark a year or 2 before moving to Vernon in 2004. The binding on the ski leaning against the Taco tailgate is a G3 Targa mounted on my 1st pair of ScottyBob 'bobtails'. I have quite a collection of them now, one for every occasion... 75mm duckbill boots were on their last legs last season, so I bit the bullet & jumped on to the NTN bandwagon for this winter. Decided on the M Equipment or Meidjo binding designed by a mechanical engineer in France. A costly endeavour & since I can't afford a new binding for each set of skis in my quiver, I installed Binding Freedom inserts. This allows me to swap the new binding out in a matter of minutes. Kept the hole pattern for 2 pairs for 75 mm, so I can still ski that norm to get the last legs out of my boots. Lots of spare parts for 75 mm bindings now!

I've considered getting a set of snowshoes & giving that a go, but I just have too much fun sliding on the long sticks! I reckon I can go pretty well anywhere with skis & skins a person on snowshoes can & as mentioned, if climbing is part of the hike, the down is a lot more efficient/fun when you can slide. Photo featuring the Tacoma with skis was on a hunt in November 2015 that turned into a ski tour instead. On a whim I threw the ski gear into the vehicle & headed out. First time hunting/exploring that location & I just kept driving higher since there was active hauling & the roads were ploughed. Didn't take long to realize I was getting too high for hunting purposes due to the generous snow pack & went for a tour up a cut block. Lunch at the top, nice little ski down. Lugged the 30-06 with me just for chits & giggles, but yeah, no sign of Bambi. A few hare tracks though.

I love that idea....I wouldn't probably light it in a stump that close to another tree personally, but when camping in the winter, I've always had issues with the fire burning down through the snow, and eventually putting itself out..simple yet effective..

And I've always wanted to do a snow cave, but was always too afraid for fear of it collapsing...did you bring a stick in with ya to poke through in case? Air hole? 3 levels with a fire at the 2nd level inside with the bottom level for the cold air to go?

Thanks harry for the kind words. The fire is a good way to go I use it a lot. As for the shelter it has a vent hole but is not split level lol. That is the correct way but I never find it cold enough to worry. I have good sleeping gear. These are not practical to make by yourself

I ne way to avoid a heavy roof and collapse is to push one foot long sticks thru from the top. As you excavate you dig up to these sticks and you can keep your roof thinner When you hit the sticks you have a one foot thick roof. Collapse is more often in a cave where you just burrow in. A shelter made of piled snow then left for a few hours to set. Then dug out is pretty stable

That was the 3rd lake up on the Joffre Lakes trail.
I've been up there 3 times but all in Winter so I never had the opportunity to see the turquoise color of the lake, but then the place is a zoo in the summer so I try to stay away. :-D

Love Winter camping, no skeeters or large hungry animals to deal with.

great new pictures posted, way to go. there inspiring in many ways, they make me want to camp and they make me want to post. on the first part camping , after my last camping trip (it was bloody cold ) I thought it might be time to put all my hot camp stuff together. so I dug out my wood stove that I made and I am going to get it easily usable . that with my Canadian army winter tent it really makes a great base camp. ill try and get some pictures up as well.

I was able to get out after new year for a three night break,, I worked my way around the banks of the pine river, kind of below stuart lake area. I set up a base and made a few tours around.
