Well I have been lurking around this site for sometime now enjoying the stories people post and asking for information, so it is time to give back.
Last spring I moved to Terrace from the East Kooteneys. It was hard leaving the Serengeti of Canada, I was really going to miss Elk season, and Mule deer hunting, and turkey hunting, but I was determined to make the most of it and hunt what there is lots of in Terrace. Bears!!
I had never really hunted Bears and to be honest didn't really want to shoot one, but it was an excuse to get out and explore my new surrounding. I told my self that I would only shoot a big boar that was on the road. Well intentions are intentions good or otherwise and the Bear had a different plan.
I had been out a few times seen some Bears but nothing that really jumped out at me, but was enjoying being out and getting to know new country. Now a little back ground here, I work in forestry and was working around Mez junction; if anyone has been up there in spring you will know there is no shortage of Bears. It was nothing for us to see 20 on the drive too and from the block. Needless to say a had a few to many close calls with the old baggy pants and on our next set of days off I told the boys " I m sick of being the prey I m going out this weekend to be the predator for a change."
I told the wife I would only be gone for the morning......
Well it looked like a black cow lumbering up the road in the gathering light. I jumped out of the truck and ran up the road finding a rest and started slowing my breathing waiting for him to turn and look at me presenting a shot. Well this Bear couldn't give two Sh*ts about me I yelled waved my arms he would turn his head look and continue on up the road. Well this continued for a few minutes until he went around a corner and out of site, I ran up the road to try and get shot, but by the time I covered the 300 or so yards he had vanished into the woods.
Well that was exciting I thought as I walked back to my truck thinking that that was the last I would see of him. I spent the rest of the morning walking and glassing and generally having a good time, but not seeing much. On the drive back down I see funny looking black rock, looking out of place at the top of a talus slope. I stop the truck, jump out with the binos and sure enough it was the same Bear squinting at me from about 100 yards away. I quickly grab my 30-06 and found a rest and wait for a shot. Boom!!!! he tumbled down the talus slope and stops on the road, he gets up Boom!!! he humps up and hobbles across the road and throws himself down the very steep, very slippery, and all round nasty area below the road.
Well now that was really exciting I think as I walk back to my truck and get my dog. I can see him down there about 100 yards or so but there is no way I can get him up to my truck by myself. Turned out there was an old cut block with a road that got to within about 500yards of him not awesome, but at least it was down hill.

I was able to role him down to a flatish spot skin and quarter him and got him to the truck in 3 trips. Needless to say I was late for what ever I was supposed to be home for, tiered and soar, but very happy.
We have really enjoyed the meat got pepperoni and smokies made along with a couple of hams all very good.
I will be out again this spring looking for a big Ol baggy pants to put meat in the freezer for summer and scratch that hunting itch that developed over the winter.
Cheers QK
