I only got 2, out with my .22 mag. I only went about 4-5 times, should have gone more!

We got a few but they were not as numerous in Squamish as I've seen in the past. If you search old threads there are a bunch of good tips and strategies.

I found that looking for them in deciduous tree cover in the rain was a good strategy, as was hunting the road early and late in the day.

We fried ours with some onion and a bit of curry paste. Outstanding.

I saw tones pre-season and for some reason they just stood there. Come sept 10 I couldn't even get 60' to them. They must know its hunting season 😉

we had a good year 36 spruce/ruffed grouse in 11 hunts all region 3, most of those hunts we had one or two rabbits as well, shot them with 12 gauge, .22, slingshots

It was hit and miss for me, ran into one mega flock, managed to get 7 of them between the two of us, maybe 25-30 all season which is not bad considering we didn't start hunting until mid October and most grouse we saw were singles and very flighty. Way too much snow in Nov for good grouse hunting this year. I also passed on a few while hiking since all I had on me was 30-06, need to find a combo gun!

didnt seem to be as many this year in areas i hunt , in years like this i tend to let them all live . saw lots of bunnies though and took 4 between me and a buddy , great meat spit roasted over a fire then stewed in hot sauce for a couple hrs . tasty campfire treats.

did very well in the peace region, last count was 22 wrapped in the freezer, not counting all the ones we ate and the ones I let fly trying to train the dog....the downside to grouse hunting is I tend to see big game when I don't have the right gun LOL

I saw 3 "bumps" moving under the snow the other day getting ready for ice fishing, looks like the grouse were struggling with all the snow, they couldn't fly out of it, and couldn't get to the surface

that's precisely why I'm flabbergasted that combo guns are not more popular. Proper ones in big bore and small bore, not shotgun/small bore; and that there isn't a repeating combo gun on the market.

Biakal has some combo guns (big bore/shotgun).

Just have to bring a sling shot, easy kill on rabbits and grouse, shoot. 50cal balls, can shoot right through the upland stuff

Wasn't a great year for grouse. Typically I don't shoot grouse unless the covy has more than 4 birds in it...and from my experience this year that only happened a few times.
As far as advice on hunting them....it really depends on which species you are after. With experience you will start to build a repetoire of spots that will produce for you year after year....
willow ruffed ....green, wet, shady spots
blues....drier higher ground...much the same habitat as Mule deer (juniper shrub, grass etc...).

none here.
but only because I wasn't hunting them.
saw oodles of them the entire season.
didn't seem like a banner year, but still saw plenty.

anyone know what stage of their cycle it's in.

I'm starting to think they should be put on the endangered species list on the island....or I'm just not looking in the right spots.
Zero birds for me :-(
