I know there are several members that are avid shed heads that are in the winter blues. Lets fuel the fire and post up some sheds to pass the time as we patiently await spring.

Here are some As They Lay (ATL) pics to start off with.

Yeah I hear they can be hard to find. My favorite part of that she'd is the little nodule on the tip of the eye guard, not sure how that kind of thing is formed?

They can grow funky ways for various reasons. Could have possibly broke the tip early in velvet but it stayed together and continued to be nourished by the velvet.

Found these two dead heads in the mountains, not sure what happened, but they weren't locked when I picked them up, perhaps when they dried up they became loose?

The best advice I can give is just get out there and pound the boot leather. Criss-cross where you figure critters winter and you are bound to find something sooner or later. While lots of guys believe the earlier the better, I disagree with that. Unless you have rock hard snow when the mass sheddin occurred, you will be wasting your time in much snow. I have rarely ever had a year where I was picking up any numbers of tine before mid March. Most of my sheds are found in April. A lot of guys hit it early thinking they have to be the first ones and they end up walking over most sheds because they were buried under the snow. I've found the odd one that seemed to float searched around for the match to no avail. A month later when the snow finally melted I found the match directly under where I had found the first one. I've seen guys go out early and push snow for weeks on end and then are pretty much spent by the time the snow starts to melt and are giving up when things are just getting good.

Here is another picture from the same day as the shed fence. I had a few paddles in this pile but by far most were my buddies.

dana

Hitting an area too early can cost ya like it did with these sheds. It was a late winter and by mid-April I was still walking on snow. I had actually walked right over these bad boys and then never hit that spot again until that fall. Imagine if I had of waited for the snow to melt before I hit it. These wouldn't have sat on the ground being chewed by rodents all spring and summer. Luckily they are still in pretty darn good shape for sitting so long.

I do go out and stretch my legs in Feb hoping I can find something in a tree well but really it is just to get a feel on tracks and winter rubs. Sometimes the south faces will melt out early and the hiking boots can be put on in late Feb, but most years it is a painful wait for mid to late March.

honestly this was the first year I actually went into different hunting areas than I normally have hunted. I hunted solo the whole season and loved it. id head up with a group and head off to my own areas every time. usually its been the same area in 5-1 and same area in 3-30 that ive gone to as some friends have cabins in both areas. the area ive been hunting in 330 I know they winter there as that's where I found the one 4 point shed 2 seasons back and ive taken two 4 points outta that area now late season. I am still pretty new to the whole hunting thing. this year I have gotten way more serious about it and wouldn't you know it... had a more successful season taking 2 muleys. as far as winter walking. I havent really done any once the final hunt of the season. that will be changing. living and learning as I go. this has been a great site for info and motivation

Spring bear hunting is always a good time to spot the road and cutblock paddles. Bulls love wintering on roads that are overgrown with alder.

The one thing that shed hunting does is allows you to really get to know terrain that you can be hunting in the following season. It is a constant learning phase and even if one doesn't pick up a single tine that day it was never wasted. Learning the lay of the land in the offseason will help you considerably in the fall. Learning ridges, draws, bumps and humps, trails, rubs, you name it. And for those that find the winter has packed on a few extra pounds, it is a good way to get into shape and be ready to go long before the rubber meets the road in the fall.

that is EXACTLY why I want to get out there. learn the lay of the land and get better prepared for the coming hunting season. like you said, whether you find anything or not its never a waste. I enjoy being outdoors so anything found is a bonus and gives you an idea of whats kickin around in the area.

That fence pic is crazy!! I love the black set in the middle.

I agree that you are best to really start hiking mid march and expect April to find the most. The down side is guys are out early and seeing tracks in the snow where you think you are the first through is depressing. The ticks start to ruin your enthusiasm pretty quick also when it warms up. Pulling ticks off all day sure can put a damper on a nice day in the bush.

Awesome pictures to all who has posted. Really an inspiration to get out there. I had my first season of shed hunting this past March/April when I was still living in Ontario, sometimes when 'yote hunting, sometimes just went out for sheds. A bit of a different game there, as most of the bushland is in small parcels separated by farms & towns but I am looking forward to getting out this spring. Pretty interesting some of the sheds I found close to home, even though it wasn't nearly in the numbers some of you are seeing.
Fingers crossed for some Elk sheds this year.

Edited: By small parcels I mean some areas less than 500 acres. In one instance it was a 10 acre plot of cedars that was holding/moving cover for deer between a private hydro corridor and some farmland. Ended up with 3 sheds out of there, 2 of which from deer I had on a game camera a few months prior.

Some times SIZE does matter. This is the only spike shed I ever found.

No pic for starters. Don't hold out on us Mark. I know you must have some cranker sheds from over the years. Lets see a few.

The G2 is sooo long on this one but there is very little for a front fork.

Not much for mass but it is still cool.

All the sheds I have posted (except the long G1 shed) are Reg8.

X2, I'm fairly certain that I've passed more spikes & small racks hidden in the cedar blow downs, based off how well decent sized ones blend in.

Youve got to get a good shed caller.

Call wholesale sports and ask if they have any in stock. It's that time of year where they start to drop so they could be sold out.

Keep the top sheds and band saw cut the rest up to sell at market price!! Hey....just an idea! Darned near $40 US for that tiny piece they call gigantic. 200-400 dollars for one elk shed all cut up.

He was pulling your leg with the shed caller. You just use natural sheds, find two to start rattling and off you go. Natural is always better but you need to find the two to start.

I've seen muleys shed out as early a Dec 26 and still packin as late as the first week of Apr. on average it seems the bulk of muleys drop between the last week of Jan and the second week of Feb. Most years there is too much snow to do any serious sheddin until early Apr.

Shed hunting is a great way to get young kids involved in hunting and to learn about wood ticks :)
As per previous posts, rather than calling for sheds I prefer to pick a calm day and just sit. Generally you can hear them drop if you are not too far away.

I've managed to find a few over the years with the last one being a nice moose shed. Instead of talking about when to look for them, can someone tell us where to look for them? Ya ya. On the ground. I know. But south vs north facing slopes, at the base of small trees etc etc etc.

dana

Sheds are where you find them. Nothing really to it other than just going out and looking. South facing fir ridges are the norm for muleys but I've found a ton in pine leading stands as well as birch/aspen stands. i've even found them in cedar/hemlock and spruce/balsam stands. Sometimes they are out in the open and sometimes they are in the thickest crap imaginable. They normally are on the ground but I've found them hanging in brush as well. Moose paddles can be found in just as diverse areas. The norm is in alder swells along creeks and swamps but I've found plenty in cutblocks as well as heavy timber. Look for winter sign. Heavy browsing, lots of winter scat, winter rubs ect.

I thought the same way as far as south facing, sunny slopes but I find a lot more in the shaded NE side of hills. My thinking was the deer would like to bed and sun themeselves in the winter but my experience has shown me that they like the leeward side of the hills. Less wind I guess. It also means more snow so these shady zones hold the snow a lot later so the sheds are harder to find.

They are where you find them. I hiked 6km last spring looking for WT sheds in an area I know has lots of WT. I actually saw close to a dozen WT during my hike. Didn't find a single shed. I got in the truck and drove two minutes and saw a WT shed from the road! Frustrating. The only thing to do is hike and hike and hike. I know guys that hike over 20km a day.

A good tip is to use a GPS and log your tracks. Pin a waypoint where you find sheds and go back a little later and see if you find more or matches. If you have an Iphone get the Motion-X GPS app. Its $1.99 and works great.

I hate these little *******s. Most Ive picked off were just a half dozen or so, but finding them on the wall of my front entrance where I came in after stripping down in the garage is unsettling.

How often do ya guys find good sheds under a freshly rubbed tree?

I usually start going Mid Feb as the cabin fever really kicks in around that time, only ever found a few sheds but makes for a good excuse to get out.

I know with elk that once one side drops he will really try to get the other side off since the loss of one really puts him off balance, with deer not so much. In that case you may find a side under a rub tree but often you will just find a side and then a little farther ahead or back you may get the other side if you are lucky. In that case he was likely just shaking his head to rid himself of the other or it merely dropped spontaneously.
Old Bill Hicks from Slocan City who really used to pound the ground for sheds found a matched set positioned where a bull had bedded and then either shook or something dropping both sides perfectly in place.

I was shedding 2 seasons ago and hit a patch of young Aspens that had small fresh rubs all over them (mid-end Feb), about two dozen. I figured a buck must have been trying to get the head gear off, checked the base of each rub but nothing. Makes sense the weight distribution would have the bigger animals off kilter and want to get both sides off.

1947 to you have any idea what that pile is worth in dog chew toys?

LOL never thought about it I like looking at the pill every day reminds me of how much walking and sweat went into finding all every antler has a story behind just like when a hunter get a trophy animal I see nothing but trophy shed finds I hope to get the pill to the top of the roof over the next 4 years if my health holds up I would never sell them there to me like having a trophy head mount to look at all the time when in your home..

I look at the few sheds I have collected the last 4 years every day and love looking at them in fact I look at them more then the animal mounts I have in my home I might be a little weird how I think about all but that's me and that's the way I think LOL just wish I could find more sheds :)..

As for finding sheds under rubs, I've found plenty. With moose paddles, you can actually look for the big rubs and going from one to the other and you are bound to find a paddle eventually.
Here is a winter moose rub.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/P4220004.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/BCBOY/media/P4220004.jpg.html)

Muleys will rub aggressively from early Jan through till shedding. They also spar quite a bit in an effort to pop them off. I believe it must get rather itchy for them and they just want them off. You find a bunch of winter rubs, you need to comb hard. They may not be under a rub but you can bet that buck was working hard to knock them off and there is a good chance he was successful and the sheds will be nearby.

JDR,
I hung that old shed in that tree probably 10 years before I took that photo. It was an ancient shed when I found it. That buck was probably roaming that area when I was a kid.

Cranbrook BC I was over at my daughters place yesterday looking after my grandson up on a hill behind her home I saw 7 mule deer bucks they where there feeding and bedding as for sparing they locked antlers and really gave it at times all at different times after they backed off they shook there heads hard my thoughts is they are trying to shack the antlers off getting itchy ??? I was wishing that at least one would fall off no luck ..

This is one time I did not bring my movie camera ....... if I had the camera I would had filmed these bucks they where not big deer or big antlers all where 2x2 and 3x3 can't wait till mid week next week to really get going on my 2014 shed hunt ,,,I found a matching pair of mule deer sheds last year on the 15th of Feb up in the hi elevation far from any town..

I've been out for a few hikes and no big finds yet. What I have been finding is human tracks everywhere I go. Snowshoe, footprints and quad tracks in all the spots I like to hunt. I went looking for WT sheds in JANUARY and guys had snowshoed all through my area a few days before. Crazy.

Pulled my first tick off as well.

I went out on Thursday for the first time ever. I'm new to hunting and shed hunting, so I wasn't really to sure where to go. I picked a spot and went for a nice 15km hike through the woods. Saw lots of fresh deer and coyote tracks, and a nice fresh area where a deer had been lying down. Zero luck for any sheds tho.

Going to head out again this weekend and try a different area.

My time has been very limited this spring for hiking but I have managed to get out for a few. Found three sets so far which is my average the last few years so maybe thats a sign its time to quit for the year. The grass is growing, bugs and ticks are out and its getting hot. Its amazing out in the bush when the warm wind is full of the smell of the forest so I will try for one or two more hikes but that will be it. Heres a few shots of some finds from this year. There seems to a lack of shed pics this year so lets see some finds boys, if you got 'em.
