THE CAVE BEAR
Over the last few months a grizzly bear I guided in 2012 has been entered in to the B & C book. Not usually one to talk about books & #s to much but this one deserves it.
So here goes the #s

18.
26 10/16
Kluane River, YT
Donnie B. Seay
Donnie B. Seay
2012 15

It is ranked # 15, tied with 4 others, and is the 4th largest ever hunted in Canada, also as a note the next one in the book that comes from the Yukon is ranked somewhere around 200
This was a very old bear, all skin and bones, I estimated the weight at a bit more than 500 lbs. Hide squared 8 ft.

This is a picture of the hunter, Don Seay, whom I guided in 2012 to this magnificent grizzly along the Kluane River in Yukon.

And a picture of myself with it.

Here is Don holding the freshly cleaned skull, he is 6ft 2in

Looking at the condition of the teeth one can understand his emaciated condition. Must'ave had a whole lot of hurting going on in the mouth.

Did I miss the measurement of his skull? Great bear. I wonder if a taxidermist has a mold that big.

yes indeed that is a old ancient bear...big no matter where you go..but for those # guys..this is bigger than most coastal 'Brown bears"..= salmon fed grizzlies along BC'S coast...where a 9' "grizzly that is old will go 25 1/2 - 26 " skull..so this is an ancient trophy of many lifetimes.

Seen another real old warrior this year that was harvested..same thing well past his prime..hide was tough teeth were dismal..however huge head and paws..

Congradulations for such an amazing harvest...great guiding ...thanbks for sharing the beast.

cheers\

Thanks for the comments especially as I haven't been congratulating a lot of people on this site who deserve it. The bear had a previous story done on it last year but FYI it was taken with a 300 weatherby and the hide was in great shape. Here is a pic of the full mount.

Thank you Sir!

This story has warmed my heart and filled my soul with joy. I am very pleased to learn that such a gorgeous, fine old beast was given a humane and merciful end by your client who now has his spirit and this Bear bonded together and shared for all to read in that book. This is fine work indeed. May that lovely mount be cherished for generations.

Congratulations!

did you get the report from the biologist about the age of that wonderful bear?

ACE
04-23-2015, 05:33 PM
Can you pull a pre-molar for aging ?
When the BC Fish & Wildlife Branch was still doing this, I was told that the tooth was cut with a diamond saw, and rings were counted like tree rings are. Sent in a number of teeth over the years. Some as young as 8yrs would make the book, and others as old as 13yrs wouldn't ..... Island Black bears.

Good looking old bear. Did you find any evidence of previous hits, old ordnance, or old battle crushed bone injuries ?

Bear

ACE,

you do not pull the tooth yourself they do that at the env office at least in Whitehorse.

We would pull them and send them in ....... there was a special envelope for the purpose. I believe that they went to a lab in Kamloops, but I'm not 100% sure ....
Medved ..... did you get an age for that grand old bear ?

325 wsm
04-25-2015, 07:04 AM
I never have confirmed the age yet, biologist was out of office both times I stopped in to check. Will try again in the next couple months when I stop in to get my license.

The biologist aged this bear (from a tooth) at 20 years old. I thought it would have been a bit more.

Wow...not what I expected...looked very simmilar to a recent 30 year old grizzly..or another 28 year old..
Great harvest though..congrads..
