View Full Version : Saw back knife?

Santa brought me a Leatherman that works well so far but I was toying with the idea of a longer blade/saw...

Does anyone know of a worthwhile saw back knife? Google gave me pages of Rambo junk...

So far Glock has a dagger that sorta looks right, SOG has their revolver which may be too short and I'd be concerned about the pivot point getting loose over time.

I carry a bone saw in my pack and I was thinking (since the pack isn't always with me) it would be good to have a knife on my belt that could saw through bone and trees. Is there much difference between the tooth patterns on a bone saw vs a wood saw? I think they are usually finer but will a wood saw dull up ridiculously fast on bone? Conversely I know I will be cutting wood with it too so I think a finer tooth bone saw would be slow on wood...

I'm also curious if anyone has experience with the hatchets that have a saw blade in the handle - worthwhile or gimmick?

something along these lines will join the collection but any feedback is appreciated.

I saw this in the saw shop a few years back and bought it its a folding pruning saw

Its worked well maybe 8" long folded up, its fairly light. Only problem is the blade is made for wood and after a few rib cages its dulled some. I checked in to getting a finer toothed blade more like a bone saw but they don't sell replacement blades at all which kind of sucks. It still works well just not crazy fast like it was when it was new. One of these days I'll take a little triangle file or whatever will fit between the teeth and sharpen it as best I can. I think it was about 30 bucks.

I saw a review on the revolver and I thought what a great idea.

I carry the kershaw alaskan blade trader...just don't need to carry anything else, can't beat that.

Used the hooked one for splitting a moose hide, had the clasp that locks over the blade bend and open up. The blade rotated and almost lopped my thumb off. I was not putting any sideways pressure on it at all, just pulling straight down the belly towards myself.

Absolute junk, will never use it again. Completely a flawed design IMO.

The Kershaw looks really cool but I have also had several accidents with a similar style of mechanism on construction knives.

Anyone used the SOG revolver - I have the same concern with any moveable/changeable system??

I have no personal experience with the SOG tool; However I have found, as you and others mentioned, pivot points and other similar features on knives and tools often become weak points. The SOG tool also seems to be mostly made of plastic. Looking at the specs, the SOG only has a slightly longer saw than the full sized leathermans.

Often having a dedicated tool which you know is solid and dependable is the best way to go. Have you considered carrying a dedicated small folding saw on your belt next to your knife (instead of a combo tool)?

From what I've heard the hatchet/saw combos are a gimmick. I did the research when I was buying my last hatchet. Lots of stories of the saw flying out of the handle while chopping wood...

cheers,
mike

Might be a little bulkier than what you're looking for but..... http://www.outdooredge.com/Kodi-Pak-Hunting-Knife-and-Saw-Combo-p/kodi-pak.htm

santa brought me this for Christmas, I haven't used it yet but it seems like quality stuff

Would the small chain saw work for you? It wouldn't clip on your belt but it is a bit bigger than a Skoal can so it would fit in your pocket. I've had one in my survival kit for years but have never actually tried to use it.

I have a Gerber Blade Changer with a saw blade. It locks solid, won't come apart. Only real problem is it is heavy. Handle and saw blade, drop point and gut hook, weigh close to 7 ounces. This is not a lightweight.

Dang, I can see how that could happen, although Ive been using mine for 4 years now and never had it open up or had an issue with any of it. I like the fact that I can get it all done with 1 tool pretty quickly by just changing a blade or 2. Also get an extra blade or 2 and you don't even need to stop to sharpen.
