I have a friend who is looking a buying a Vortex scope for his new 30-06. He will probably shoot out to 300 yards. Reliability is a must. Which scope should he be considering?

I have a 4-16x44 Viper HSLR on my 338RUM and like it.

Second on the HSLR

I have a 4-16x50 on one of my 300 Win Mags and I have a 6-24x50 FFP on my second 300. Have shot them both out to 1000 and they track accurately and i have never had a POI shift under recoil or impact. I have lots of hands on time with most other Vortex Products. Realistically any of them will handle the 30-06 comfortably.

I also have the Viper HSLR, atop my Rem700 XCR and love it.

I have a diamondback 3-9 on my 30/06 I like it so far but I am thinking about uprgrading to a bdc reticle to help with further shots than 300yds

I have the viper 4-12x 40 on a T3 270 wsm and it has been good to me and I have no complaints with it at all. It is about 4 years old now. If I were to do it over I would spend the little bit extra and go the 4-16x50.

My two bits...

As you go up in price you get better durability, better quality of glass, and better "doo-dads".

IMO shooting out to 300 yards you don't need any "doo-dads" - just sight the rifle in 1" high at 100 yards and you are good for the vast majority of hunting situations, even without some flat-shooting magnum.

So if I were in his shoes, looking at Vortex, I'd get a basic Viper with the basic v-plex reticle (if it comes with it, seems most are coming with a BDC even though you don't need it). If he's going beyond 300 yards then he will get use out of different reticles, more windage/elevation travel, greater magnification, etc. etc.

My 2 cents (actually it didn't even cost you 2 cents for taht advice).

Look at you with your Fancy gold ring on the Bell, would you like a round of applause?

you are living in a dream world, the leupy didn't fare well compared side by side to the vortex of equivalent pricing...gotta do your research, leupy has been moved to the back of the bus, sitting right beside bushnell

I give credit where credit is due for product quality, but they bang for buck game puts them at the back of the pack.
