I have been thinking a lot lately about shed hunting and was interested to hear everyone's experience and opinion on when whitetails start to drop their antlers, preferrably in Region 3. However, experience from around our province is good information.

I would have thought the majority of antler drop takes place in February and March, however, I was informed the other day that whitetails drop their antlers in January.

What is everyone's thoughts?

they start dropping from the mid-end of December and continue throughout the spring. most are dropped by into febuary but some hold until march. I would say a good number have dropped already. all of the different ungulates drop at different times, just have to time it right as you don't want to push the animals out of their wintering grounds.

The only thing harder to find than a cagey region 3 WT buck are reg 3 WT sheds. I have only found 2 WT sheds around the Loops and I saw one from the road. They live in the thickest crap and its almost like they bury the sheds when they drop. I have hiked LOTS of WT country and just don't find them.

As far as when they drop I have also heard Dec-Jan for WT but that is not based on my observations or finds. If you find some throw some pics up.

When I lived in the OK in the 80s I found the bulk of the whitetails shed in early March. Used to find lots of sheds in March on top of the hard pack with blood still on the snow. I haven't focused on whitetail sheds for years. Here in the North Thompson I've only found a handful while looking for muley or moose sheds. Lmw is correct. They seem to drop in the thickest stuff here. That wasn't my experience in the OK. They were pretty easy to find there.
