My dad and I had a pretty good shoot today considering the weather. Almost a 2 guy limit of mallards, some teal, and two widgeons. The birds were decoying pretty good aswell, but they are definately getting a little gun shy. But the highlight of the day is one of the greenheads my dad shot was banded! It was a lone single that decoyed right in and my dad gave it to him.. and there it was belly up, kicking his feet with that trophy silver on his foot.

We didnt take any field pics today, so here's a garage floor pic lol

wow congrats, they are rare as it is, but for the number of birds that have been around the island this year i would think the odds would be even farther against one of those guys showing up.

nice shoot

I cannot BELIEVE the difference in odds everyone's talking about! I shot my first duck about 24 years ago when my dad decided I was old enough to handle a gun...since then I have shot 30 banded birds! I find it incredible that some guys have been hunting for longer than that and never have gotten ONE!! You Longshot boys seem to shoot your fair share of birds too!

The top three most interesting ones I've got were an 8-year-old Brant, an 8-year-old Snow Goose, and I shot a drake Mallard in the Nanaimo estuary that was banded in Alberta (I thought it was amazing that it switched flyways...talk about a wanderer!).

My dad has a LOT of bands. One I posted a pick on here because it was so old. I can't remember now I think it was 20+ years old.

What do you guys end up doing with the bands afterward? Do you have to return it or can you keep it after reporting?

You get to keep em...you just report the number and they send you the info on the bird. Back in the day they mailed you a certificate, now you can just get the info online and/or get a certificate (most of the time anyway...I've had quite a few that come up blank).

Put them on your lanyard , there were 15 on the stud in my basement of my first house and I stupidly left them there including a TEAL band which was mighty small....

Congrats to your dad.
I have several bands from Canadas, but none from ducks. My son got his first band on Christmas eve. It was a drake mallard hatched this year on the Guichon Ranch near Merrit. Boy was he ever excited.
