Finally made it back to the lake. Took "Sunday" up with me and we fished Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. Not as much action as the last trip but still lots of nice fish. Had a few smaller ones, but landed 10 fish over 19 inches including two double headers; a pair of 19-1/2 inchers and then a 22 and 23" - probably my biggest double at the lake. We also got a couple monsters; a 24-1/2 and a 24-7/8. I think the lake must be a bit colder because the fish didnt seem to have as much fight in them as they did a couple weeks ago. No snow on the hills and very low water - possibly the lowest I've seen at this time of year. Spent New Years at the cabin with my parents and my family, so got Riley James out and into a couple nice trout as well. A good end to 2013!

Awesome fish Jim!
Care to share any methods? I used to fish Sproat and Great Central with limited success. My gear was huge gang trolls followed by f7 sized flatfish tipped with a worm. I'd just let out a ton of line without a weight and hope I would notice a fish before it drowned behind the throb of those gang troll blades. I would sure like to have 1/2 your skills!

My typical cutthroat setup is trolling with plugs, no weight or gangtroll. I occasionally fish flatfish, but mainly Tomics. Other plugs I fish include; Rapalas, Lucky Louies, Lymans, J-plugs, Silver Horde and most recently an old Rhys Davis "Swiftsure" I found last year. Ugly as sin but it caught a few of the fish pictured in my last couple of threads. Many spoons also work well, but need to be trolled faster than I like to troll with the plugs. "Skills" is being very complimentary, there's no substitute for putting the time in on the water.
Tight lines!

JP, are you using downriggers? How deep are you fishing?

I generally use tiny black dick nyte spoons right on the surface-no weight other than a barrel swivel and get a lot of 12-14'' trout but the bigger cutthroats are very carniverous so I guess it just makes sense to use plugs and fish deeper rather than smaller lures on the surface -bigger fish-bigger lures

In my experiance Big fish get big by eating big things. There is some "Tuning in" required lol,,, cant use a 7" 602 Tomic and expect a cuttie to eat it,,, though im sure one will try lol......

There is less energy spent for the gain when you eat something big. And Coastal Cutthrought are The top of the chain for aggression and "Go big" mentality

I have a small Scotty "Laketroller" downrigger I have recently started experimenting with, mainly for fishing in the warmer months when the fish seem to be deeper. So far, more hastle than its worth for me. I think the simplicity of this fishery is one of the attractions. For whatever reason the big guys seem to move up when it gets cold this time of year so most of my luck for big fish has always been near the surface in the winter months. Tie on a plug, let it out behind the boat, crack a cold one and relax. A friend once worded it perfectly; "Long hours of boredom interupted by brief moments of shear panic."
ONE THING I'D LIKE TO NOTE: If you head to Cowichan, please follow the regulations. I have fished the lake extensively for over 25 years and there is no question in my mind that the fishing has greatly improved since the bait ban/barbless hook and 50 cm maximum size limit were introduced about 10 years ago. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. Now to find the time. I heard before that they like the tomics on lake cowichan. We've had ok success with the blue/silver flatfish in the spring up in alberni
