Duchess the Pudelpointer Dog

About 1 year ago, my wife and I decided, we should start looking for a dog.

I really wanted a hunting companion to do everything from: alert me to bears (as I am an incredibly heavy sleeper, to track wounded game (as I have seen dogs work before finding things that have gone a long ways), to retrieving ducks, and possibly pointing upland game (if I got one that could do it). I consider myself a well rounded hunter, who hunts all types of game, and wanted the same from a hunting partner dog.

I have never owned a dog before, and I knew what I didn't want, more than what I wanted. I was really new to this, and really wanted to keep my options open. The first major hurtle was my dog allergy. I am allergic to most dogs. There are a few, like poodles and non shedding type dogs that don't really seem to bother me much. So I started doing some research. I mean if my friends cougar hound can retrieve, surely it can be taught to one of the other breeds. There were 4 or 5 that were retrieverish that might work for me. I have even heard that just having a dog will sometimes force a person to build up an immunity to the allergens they put out. But after looking at the list, I figured one of these other breeds would be better. They were Portuguese water dog, standard poodle, Irish water spaniel, and Pudelpointer. (Or PP for short) That being said, some articles said that the PP do lightly shed, and were not hypoallergenic. I had to see for myself.

So I called up the best breeder for the PP. He is the guy who introduced the breed to North America, more or less. Bob Farris of Cedarwood Gun Dogs in Idaho. I talked with him quite a while, and he said they were very low shedding and not many people seem to react to them. So then I asked him for some local people who he might have sold them to, so I could go and meet one of the dogs, and see for myself.

I set up a meeting at a local dog park with a person who doesn't live too far away and everything went well. I even looked in their back seat expecting to see a pile of hair, but there was none! Hmmm. Maybe this breed will work for me.

There are some upsides and some downsides to every breed though. I talked to a few people who owned this breed and everyone seemed to really like them. The other thing I noticed was that they were all real hunters.

Talking with Bob, he was very keen on really improving the breed. He wanted the scores to go up and up over time as the breed improved. So much so that he and other breeders will never enter the dog into the AKC. He doesn't want it bred for looks, he wants them bred to hunt. And hunt they do. They are NAVHDA's #1 performing breed, both in Natural Ability and also in Utility testing. Bob pretty much won't even sell a dog to you, unless its going to be hunted.

Then came the bad news. If I wanted to wait for the best breeder of this breed, I would have to wait 6 months to a year. However, he would base the parents, around what I wanted in my dog. Important to me, was low shedding, and really good in cold canadian waters. I wanted a female, as I have heard they are easier to train, and I wanted one with a strong hunting drive. He soon picked out the best dam, and had 2 potential sires in his stock.

6 months later I got the call. Mustang Salli (NA 112) was going into heat. She was to be bred with an Austrian/Czech dog called Lord Ze Strazistskych Lesu (NA 112 UT 186 Prize III). What do you know it worked, and soon our little Dutchess Dog was born.

We went and picked her up from the Seattle Airport, and soon had her at her new home. I did a lot of hunting this season after picking her up Sept 1st. So unfortunately, we didn't get to spend as much time together as I would have wanted. I wanted to take her with me, but she just wasn't ready for the wilds of BC just yet. She did make one trip with me in October, and since then she has been keeping the truck well guarded while I am out chasing cats. Hopefully, she will get out for ducks or geese a couple of times next month, but in the mean time, its training every day.

She is coming along nicely though. I have been more worried about doing something that is tough to un do though. I have read through 3 books on retriever training, and am going through the puppy retriever training DVD now. I can tell she has a ton of drive, and she loves more than anything to hunt. Probably a bit more energy than I bargained for, but once she has grown up I will start running with her. She is a great family pet though and really has become a member of the family. I look forward to many adventures with her beside me.

Here are a whack load of pictures, just because she is so cute....

I will keep posting on this thread as I am sure there will be lots of questions that come up over time.

Good choice, and for all the right reasons - good family dog, very versatile in the field, low allergy effect, and eager to please (biddable) - while still thinking through problems independantly. It took some work to cure my P.P. from chasing deer and cattle, he had a life-long hate on for coyotes (from an unfortunate experience as a pup) and he needed an extra *zzhole punched in his ham to learn to leave bull elk alone, but he was my constant companion, fearless without antagonizing bears & cougars, never lifted a lip to any child even if it meant him having to play 'horsey' or give up 'his spot' on the couch!
My biggest mistake was that I always couldn't wait for him to get a bit older and slow down a little bit, but by the time that happened, overnight (it seems), he was an old dog. Be prepared for the long haul, my Max lived to 14 years. He's been gone 6 1/2 years now, and not a day goes by that I don't miss him terribly.

Man, even though its a long ways a way, its something I have never thought about before. Getting attached to an animal. I'm so used to killing them now that I never thought it would be possible to get that attached.

Thanks for the story though. Thats pretty awesome.

For those that don't know?? A lot of work and thought had gone into developing the Pudelpointer to what it is by today's standards. The blend of around 100 pointers and several specific poodles created this fine hunting dog and never mistake the hunting virtues of a standard poodle. A to die for looking pup you have. You will enjoy the dog you make it and be astounded at it's hardwired natural hunting abilities................

Beauty dog! Any dog that has poodle in it will be smart. My standard poodle has become my big game hunting companion, and I'm amazed at how well she obeys in the field. My only regret is that I don't do much bird hunting, and my dog is bird-crazy, retrieves well, and would make a great bird dog.

Exactly, and the breed development led to the dog of today which breeds true and have its own breed standards, which is exactly what sets it apart from the so called "designer dogs" being cross bred today.

took her out with a few great guys from the site to introduce her to an actual hunt. She was a little concerned when she saw one of the dogs bring a flapping pheasant out of the bush! But we let it go in a field again and it took off. The prey drive kicked in instantly and she went and tackled her first live bird! It took her a minute to figure out how to pick up the live bird, but she soon had the pheasant in her mouth and was trotting around not wanting to come anywhere near me! Finally after I ran away from her I got it back. Even though it wasn't perfect delivery at all, I was a sure proud dog owner.

Then came the duck and one lesser goose. With a couple other great guys from this site. She hammered them both right away, and I was quite surprised how easily she managed with the larger goose size. Getting her to bring them back to me will be the hard part though, but now that she's 6 months, she's in for spaying tomorow and when she's healed up its time to start some more serious training.

Looking forward to building a versatile hunting partner that will be more than just a hunter, but a member of the family.

When your dog figures out that you are both working as a team and the whole scenario is more prosperous for them and much more fun for them when your involved, the retrieve will happen. Dogs firstly love to please themselves with us being secondary and when you make retrieving lots of fun, they won't forget. It would amaze some people to know how much valuable field work can be done from the friendly confines of your own living room sofa with toys, treats, praise and very short intervals of fun, and then stop and leave them wanting more. There are wonderful exercises for this and I'm sure the accomplished dog men from this site will PM you with great advise. Best of Luck with your little buddy......

And here is one of the accomplished dog men now. With all the good things done with Mater, someone is doing something very right. To name a few, Buck, Sasquatch, Slapper,Yamadirt, Labguy, Foxton, these guys should be able to get you around every new learning curve for you, and I have no doubt they would more than step up to the plate and help you through this if asked to do so. With her force fetch getting close to finished she is doing well with Kevin Hill at Belmont Gun dogs. I'm there almost every week learning how to train. I can pick up on her difference in personality and functionality with other dogs that Kevin is working with. She's low on the totem pole of number of months training but I am seeing a definite progression. It's starting to come together. She has such a strong hunting desire that it almost over takes her drive to want to pick up bumpers. I don't think this will be an issue once the light goes on in the field this year while chasing live birds and the reason she's doing all these silly drills each day.

Im im really looking forward to getting her hunting, I just hope I don't do anything to wreck her. Her pointing ability needs to be honed more, as well as her steadiness, and her force fetch is coming but not perfect yet. I think she's going to be a great hunting partner, and I'm looking forward to the partnership in the field we will build.

Good work Dave, getting it all straight in your head does not always coincide with the dog getting it all straight at the same time as you. Patience is a virtue, always small steps over larger ones. You will know when the Force Fetch is working when the directive to pick up anything including your car keys is as easy for her as returning with a bird in her mouth. Don't be afraid of wrecking your dog, just be honest of her capabilities at her young age and don't let the fragile male ego supersede, be intuitive to her personality, forgiving of her mistakes, and you will be amazed how forgiving dogs are of ours................
Have fun hunting with her....

Im not sure about BB but I need a dog with an off switch. Those dogs are ridiculous. I would however like to see them try and take on a wild gbear that has all its teeth and see how they do. They look tough as shite

Right you are, the only switch off they have is when you put them in the kennel and they can't go anywhere.
I think the closest terrier I have seen around here is the Fox Terrier. They are nuts, just not as nuts.
These dogs are hard to train but very versatile.

Those were the old days probably when in Europe they allowed trapping and keeping bears.
In Eastern Europe, people know well, gypsies would tame bears for dancing.
They pierce their nose and put them on a leash and go from fair to fair.
I believe this has been outlawed now.

Not that I'm trying to piss you off, but have a look.
The conditions that these bears lived in would piss of even the Anti PETAs
