Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. A friend of mine gave me a 7 mm mag Husqvarna rifle for Christmas. The other day he was able to dig out another barrel for it, chambered in 358 norma mag. I have a 30-06 that I do most of my hunting with. Just wondering which barrel would you use in this rifle? Thanks

7 mm is probably cheaper and easier to purchase. Moose and smaller animals the 7mm would probably work fine. 358 Norma might work good for G bears and bison. But I've never owned either cartridge

Does your friend need another friend? Like wade said use the 7mm for most hunting and use the 358 for gbear and maybe even moose in gbear country. 358 shells are a premium.

don't know but you could send them to me for a couple of decades Then I will send it back and let you know which one worked best

I doubt you are going to be changing back and forth with your barrels. The 7mm might be cheaper to shoot and find shells for , but you already have the 30-06 so not a massive change. Keep using the 30-06 and get the 358 for a bigger step up , unless you are meaning a 358 win, but the 358 Norma or STA will throw some heavier bullets down range than you can ever do with the 7 mm and where the 30-06 maxes out. Which ever one the 358 gives you a different class of firearm , but that is just me

thanks for the input, I am thinking along the lines of Pioneerman. Having the 358 in the gun cabinet is nice option to have. Either way it is a good problem to have and I can't wait to take this rifle to the gun range

I am kind of partial to heavier bullets and calibre diameter because of the type of hunting I normally do (in heavy cover) I have a 7mm rem mag as well but always seem to go to my 338 win mag, so where I'm going with this is 7mm and 06 are so close almost interchangeable as mentioned earlier I would get the 358 norma put on the action and use it. That being said all are good calibres for NA game and will get the job done just fine, personal choice for you.

If this was originally a .358 norma its a model 1651 and they are worth a bundle. 358 norma is very expensive to shoot unless you reload but it is a very cool caliber especially in a Husqvarna. I have custom .358 norma and I would ditch it in a second for a 1651.
I to need friends like yours.

Everett - thanks for the info. I am not sure of the model but my friend said it came with both barrels when he bought it. All I know is that it has a smooth action and is a lot nicer rifle than I have ever had.

A 7 mag is a great cartridge but its too close to a 30-06 which you already have. If you can handle some recoil and a pretty much reloading only venture the 350 Norma gives you a whole other class of rifle. Not to mention its uber cool factor in a Husqvarna.. they were made for each other.
