Seeing how it's a rainy sunday I thought I might post the story of my hunt
This year sucked as far as hunting goes. Had no time to go out as much as I like to. Had to cancel my spring bear hunting plans do to work, I did some renos on my house that took up all my time in Aug and most of sept. Oct was busy at work again. So when my hunting partner and I had the Nov long weekend available we were gone hunting.
First day was a slow day, seen a few small bucks and some doe's. We did a lot of glassing and a lot of hiking but no legal bucks. We were just happy to be out and seeing deer. Second day started off with no action, didn't see much in the early morning. After some glassing I had to relieve myself of my morning coffee and while doing so I look up and see a deer about a 100yards in front of me. I look closely and realized it's a buck. So there I am with my pecker in one hand still taking a piss and binos in my other trying to see if it's a four point, Yelling at my buddy " there's a buck right in front of me" . The deer just standing there watching me take a piss. Turns out my buddy was also taking a piss about 25 yards back. So after the scramble to zip up the pants. We were still trying to ID him as a 4point but we couldn't get a good angle on him and the background was almost the same color of his antlers. We just couldn't get a positive ID. We thought he was four on the right side but just couldn't be 100%. Didn't get a decent look at his left side. He stood there for what seemed like 5 mins. Then a doe took off bouncing away from behind the small hill. We didn't even know she was there. He took off after her with his head berried right up her arse. We kept the binos on him as we watched them take off. About 600 yards + away she stopped and he hoped right on her and did his deed. That was cool to see. But we were bummed out with thought that he could have been a four point. But felt good about not pulling the trigger.
So we hopped in the truck a drove to another spot in the general direction the buck and doe we just saw ran off to. We hopped out and hiked up to a spot we could glass from. This time I took the spotting scope with me. As we were glassing with the bino's I spotted the unmistakable white ass of a mule deer about a 1 km away on a treed ridge. So I set up the spotter to get a better look and right away I could see bone on his head but he was behind a tree and I couldn't get a clear look at him to get a positive ID. He circled around for a bit then beds down. My hunting partner to a look through the spotter and after a minute or two he slowly said "I think its a four point" and could hear his voice get a little more excited as he said it again. Then he said " he is a four point " so I jumped back on the spotter and now I can clearly see his left side was 4 point.
So we make a play knowing that we are only going to be able to get within about 200-300 yards as this area is mostly open country with not a lot of cover. I asked "who's taking the shot?" My buddy says "You spotted him, he's yours" so off we go. This is my favorite part of the hunt. Harts racing, adrenaline is flowing. We got to about 300 yards and the buck gets up. So we quickly get set up and I shot, not much of a reaction. So fired again and my buddy yelled out " You F**king nailed him " He was very confident I hit him good with the last shot. So we head up to where he was and we're seeing tones of blood and tissue. We lost it after 20 yards and took a few minutes to find it again. He probably went 60-70 yards from were I shot him. Dragged him off the hill whole then did the gutless method and packed him out the 3/4 km back to the truck.
There was a doe with him and I think it might be the buck we saw earlier my hunting partner doesn't think so. Either way we had a blast. We went again 2 weeks later to fill buddies tag and seen more bucks in 2 days than ever before but they were all 2x2's and 3x3's.
He is a small 4x4 but as they say " you can't eat antler"
