Has anyone done Surf Fishing in Cabo before?? Leaving Dec 14th .
We will charter a Boat for a day but i want to also try some surf fishing and looking for some pointers on what to use and any areas you have had luck..I will take a rod down and probably buy lures there..
What about using leaders and what test of line. I would love to tie into a Rooster fish from shore ....

Cheers.

I packed a travel rod when I went to Playa del Carmen, williams spoons, rapalas, spinners, jigs, hooks, weights, snaps/swivels.....just take a handful of shrimp from dinner for bait if lures aren't working...caught a variety of little fish, not sure what they were but colourful, big fight for little fish, had a cuda attack one was I was reeling it in too, got a minute or two fight out of him, he put musky to shame!

I'd recommend 20 lb braid power pro and 20 and 60 lb mono/fluoro leaders, a couple steel leaders if you find toothy fish, I used the 30 lb rio wire tippet....next time I'd pack bigger/heavier lures to get better casting distance...I'm not sure if there were any implications with licensing, but I didn't have any troubles, I fished for an hour or two a few of the mornings

I tried to book a day on a charter but was cancelled every day due to high winds, but instead of buying through the resort, I went down to the docks and negotiated, got an 800$ package (as advertised at the resort) for 250 USD, I even got 230 back on my last day due to the high winds, but I guess you run the risk of getting ripped off completely with that

the locals I met were very interested in trading for my lures, I used lures as tips to get FAST service at our bar LOL

good luck

green or blue Krocs (and a wire leader if possible) work great for both sierra and sole. Leatherman or pliers to get the hook out of the reef fish you don't want. Buzz bombs good, but the Krocs are unbeatable.

don't need license if fishing from shore.

Its a lot easier flying with 4 piece rods (vs. 2-piece). I just carry them onboard.

Rapala makes nice 4 piece travel surf rods that are well suited for down there. Several of the stores around Vancouver sell them.

I never did fish from shore but I watched the locals with their water bottle hand lines take a few small ones. Fishing gear selection was piss poor and pricey at the Walmart in Vallarta.
good luck

When I was in Los cabo the locals would walk the beach until they found a debris pile ( foam build up and sea weed pieces) about 20 feet out. They would cast out past it and then real in through it. Seen quite a view caught this way. They would fish it until the waves broke it up again and moved on.
Makes sence the feeder fish might hang around these build ups

The couple of times I've been to Mexico I took a 4 piece rod, a spinning reel and a handful of 2.5" buzz bombs. Worked like a charm. Caught some really nice fish from shore and from jettys. They are very strong for their size.

One thing I learned is that Mexicans can get downright upset when they see you release fish. To many of them, it's like throwing a club sandwich into the drink. I started offering my fish to locals who were nearby, they do appreciate it.

I used the jointed life like ones like this http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/fresh-saltwater-fishing/plugs/blueback-herring-swimbait/prod297442.html worked awesome for cudda. They are pricey so pick up some titanium leaders to go with them. Shrimp, scraps from other seafood etc work well for bait also.
I never had an issue with bringing any of my fishing gear to Belize and I packed a ton with me... I wouldn't put your rod in your suitcase tho bring it as carry on it'll be safer, I took two and one got broke on the trip down in my suitcase....
Talk to the locals and see where they would recommend fishing if you can.....

Ya i was in his store and had a Good BS with Stephen Jansen. I also saw the Muley Buck. I tried to talk him into taking me out personally but he just got back from an Ibex hunt in Turkey and lost one of his toenails so was hobbling around. I never had any luck from our beach in front of playa Grande so next time i will book a trip with a guide down there. It was a bit of hassle as well packing my own rods and paying extra to bring them….
However i did Catch and release 2 Striped Marlin and lost a third, also caught a nice Dorado and had some cooked for us at a restaurant 5 different ways then the rest i had smoked and brought it home…Cant wait to go back , would love to have had my sons with me. We booked with Minervas and those guides worked their asses of for us !

Nice sounds like you had a great trip ! What did they charge u for fishing charter?

Springer

They charged close to $800 but it ended up being a 10 hr day and it was sunshine all day!!
The surf fishing never produced anything but if i would have went further north on the Pacific side it probably would have been better from what i learned.
We chartered Minervas and i would definitely go back with him the next time we go !!!They worked their ass of and man they can drive that Boat especially with the other competition around.

First fish of the day was a decent Dorado. We had half prepared at a Restaurant and they cooked it 5 different ways , the other half got smoked and brought it home.

The first Marlin my Wife fought for about 15 mins and she got tuckered out so i fought it for another half hour and finally got it to the Boat for a Photo then quickly released it..

The second Marlin was only about a half hour after the first one and it was another good scrap but we landed it as well…anyone know what the little White fish was that was stuck under his right front fin, it was attached by his sucker lips ??
