looking for areas to duck hunt around kamloops

BiG Boar

3 whole posts in hey? Actually the first 2 were similar. Anything to contribute to the site?

I find you get more help if you offer at least an interesting post or 2 before you go straight for the honey holes.

Yes there are plenty of people on this site with access to amazing hunting areas who are passionate about keeping the sport alive by bringing on new hunters. But they won't run the risk of taking out a complete stranger who could be unsafe and a total psycho... Or worse still a socialist.

Here's a suggestion: get your butt out of your chair and do what a lot of guys on here do: enjoy the great outdoors. Go scouting, go for a walk in the country, knock on doors. Why would anyone here help you if you aren't willing to put some work in for yourself?

cole97

I'm not a socialist I just want to get into duck hunting and try something just tired of the old spot and stock so if anyone knows some areas around Kamloops give me a shout

12-05-2013, 07:03 PM
im sure it would say in the regs iv never done it so i dont know but i dont see how it would be a problem as long as your useing steel shot witch you need to use for all waterfowl

I just don't want to get nailed by the game warden by something stupid

BiG Boar
12-05-2013, 08:15 PM
Then call your local game warden and ask about the lakes you've been seeing ducks on. One simple phone call or email.

Take a map book. Read the regs.

I agree with ru rancher. If you didn't grow up waterfowling with family it can be fairly daunting aquiring good gunning! Some of you guys commenting on his post are in fact still wet behind the ears as far as I'm concerned??? I try to take new guys out every year and generally have had good success mentoring them. Lots of guys are all gung-ho to go and when the rubber meets the road they bail on me??? Maybe my quirkey reputation precedes
me???? Doesn't hurt to show newbies the ropes, remember boys strength in numbers when our sport is threatened!! --Cheers--Field Marshal.

While I echo a bit from everyone, it is mind blowing that for some reason water fowling gets more of these posts then anything else. I mean you never see, hey I wanna try sheep hunting, take me to your spot or variations of that. And it seems like every few days we get this.

We have taken new guys out every year. Quite a few actually. Every year since I have lived here. While I was far from a newb to waterfowling when I moved here, Field marshall actually offered to take me out and since then we have become quite the couple!.

However, my best advice to someone brand new to waterfowling is if you want to get into it, get into it. You don't have to have anything to offer persay ( although it helps, like a spot to go to, or a few dekes, or something to show you are committed) but the biggest thing is a super keener attitude. Be gung hoe! Guys with experience are not really likely to take a guy that "just wants to try and see if they like it before they spend the money" I know that type of approach doesn't even get a second look from me.

Wow, pretty harsh shit you guys! I always thought this was a place for hunters to share with other like minded people. It wasn't very long ago that Big Bore was in the same boat as yourself but now that he's a seasoned vet he comes off with shit like this! I'd love to help ya out but yer in an area I only hunt Deer in, sorry! K

I am well aware of my lack of experience in almost every type of hunting. No need to bring it up.

Shit like this is just the truth of the matter. He posted on this same subject twice before and was getting zero responses. I just gave him the goods. Don't expect to have honey holes handed to you ever, when you get them, hold them secret, and if you only have 2 posts, don't expect much of a response.

Take a walk through the newbie hunters looking for a partner thread, and you'll see the overwhelming truth. People don't give up their honey holes easily.

Asking for spots, no matter the species is and always will be taboo. Until you have put in the work, been generous and shown someone and then lost "a spot" you don't get it. When you loose a permission because a friend took a friend and then they took friends you'll really get it.

so how about asking the right question, which has not been asked?

What do I look for to find a duck spot?

see the difference?

or how about what the minimum I need to get duckin?

shotgun, some dark clothes is the bare minimum, couple of dekes and waders and your even better.

i did a series of posts awhile back you should read as a primer http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?14596-Waterfowling-101-getting-started&highlight=Duck. There are 4 or 5 search waterfowling 101

Shang Wheeler is quoted as saying, "I'm willing to help anyone, that first help themselves" couldn't agree more.

very best,

ian

We all need to stick together! I always try to help new hunters out! I live in the lowermainland and when asked questions regarding hunting areas , i always try to point them in the right direction. I dont give them my honey holes that ive worked hard at finding but give them an area to start, maybe somewhere i started out and somewhere they can possibley connect with a deer or duck ect.

Kamloops can be a paradise for waterfowl hunting,,,,birds migrate directly down the north Thompson and disperse when they hit south Thompson,,,,,and will stay on the river system as long as it doesn't completely freeze up,,,,,lots of different ways to hunt them on the river,,,,,spot and stalk, very good way of getting a goose or two,,,,,,pass shooting, anchor your boat in a narrow part of river and catch em going up or down river,,,,,and of course decoys, many sand bars to pick from, hardest part is tryin to blend ur self into the environment,,,,,,and a modified choke and #2 steel is a good all round load for both goose and duck out to 40 yards,,,,,,,

12-06-2013, 03:28 PM
Shumway lake through to stump lake good huntin,,,,,,,Nicola lake good for goose and divers,,,,,,,north Thompson,,,south Thompson,,,,kamloops lake,,(tranquile creek boundary),,,,,and earlier in season,,,tons of pot holes up in batch,,,,,,and up top barnhartvale,(Campbell lake plateau)

If theres nothing in the regs stating you cant, I would tend to think you can :)

You've found what you think is a good spot already. Nothing in the regs saying you cant shoot there. Go. Shoot.

Look on Google Earth for lakes, ponds or small bodies of water around your area. Usr the co-ordinates to scout them out and get permission from land owner.Pot hole jumping can be a hoot.

If the season is open odds are the lakes are legal to hunt unless your talking residential area or watershed. The regs will tell you if they are not open. Hope this helps.

Tunkwa is under 6 inches of ice at the moment. Probably not so good for ducks. But if you do go up there let me know how you get on
