Late season Muley

Father in law and I headed out Dec 1st for what was going to be the last hunt of the year. Had put in a lot of hours so the pressure was starting to build, as well as the fact that my wife had already got her 4 point(back to back years with a 4 point on her birthday, unbelievable)... We had been hunting the same area hard for the better part of the year as we were seeing a ton of sign, rubs etc. Had seen what i believe was the same buck a couple times. Once in the pooring rain and second time during the rut with atleast 5 does with him. Both times in the exact same clearing. No shot either time, slipped into thick stuff in seconds and wouldnt show himself no matter what.

By this time of the year the snow was extremely loud, I made my way to the clearing hoping the does would still be hanging around. They were in this clearing every morning like clock work all season. Nothing there not a single doe. I decided to move above the clearing in some timber between the clearing and a hay field. 10-15 mins later i hear somthing moving at me at an alarming rate coming right out of the hay field. First a doe jumps the fence at full speed and hot on her trail was a buck. I grunted and he slowed to a walk not 30 yards in front of me...

I think he's a migrant deer. Tight rack in what looks to be like open(relatively) country. I could be wrong... but no matter what it's an awesome deer.

Interesting thought, the buck or bucks i had seen in the same area had a tall looking rack as well but it was mere seconds each time. No way of knowing for sure. Was quite something seeing that rack come crashing towards me, heart almost jumped out of my chest.

Pic was after dressing, didn't have phone/camera until we went back for quad. But you're not far off he had no fat on him at this point of the year.

So made my first attempt at a Euro mount out of this guy, with plenty of help from my father in law. Started working on it out at the inlaws around the start of February. Buckley was the only one enjoying the smell...

Side note we went for a hike that morning and Buckely found his first shed that day. A super fresh whitey; getting him to sit still with it when we got back was another thing..I was quite proud and we will be doing more shed hunting this spring

Anyway back to the mount. finished product. Didnt cut it perfectly but turned out ok.

Also to answer Mike's questions it was quite a bit bigger than my wifes from this year but just edged out hers from last year..
