Just received a call from the LEH office ,someone returned a bison tag and I am next on the list .So the end of January looks like we will be up north .Wouldn't it be nice if all leh tags could be given back ,so others could use them Merry Christmas everyone

That's a great Christmas gift from the government and the thoughtful hunter who returned his draw, Trapman. I'm sure you'll put that to good use. Congrats - looking forward to a full report with pics. :-D

Must be tough sitting down with that horseshoe

I agree being able to turn in other LEH tags would be good

Turning in other tags would result in less tags being given out. Successful harvest rate is factored into the equation when the number of available tags are decided.

Wouldn't the same be true for bison?

Also, there's no guarantee that the new tag holder will be successful. I agree he has higher odds of success than someone who doesn't even go, but...

I assume that the difficulty in making a bison trip come together causes a lot of people to back out. In order to ensure harvest happens they have gone to this system. I guess it's less of an issue with other species. I'm sure those with more knowledge of the subject can chime in.

You are correct - there is no guarantee the new tag holder will be successful - but if 10 tags are given out and all 10 people go hunting, odds are there will be more animals harvested than if 10 people are drawn and 5 go hunting - especially if success rates are constant. Harvest questionnaire information is used in determining number of authorizations available.

Makes sense. Even if you know where the honey-hole is, getting there in January isn't just a matter of going for a drive or a stroll.

Best of luck to the OP! I'd be going for sure if I got it!

Wow. What happened to reduced odds?

I've always thought they give tags out to the guys they know will cut them.

Does the LEH application and criteria for awarding a tag ask "are you a good bison hunter"???

A or B? If A I will see you there then I guess...I know 3 of the tag holders for this hunt. Send me a PM if you are in A, maybe we can have a beer one night

No, but they know who are doing their compulsorys. Why not give out tags to guys they know will get er done?

I had the same luck in 2007 though I got the call in August and the hunt was late November. They seem to "manage" the bison hunt more than the other species. Do the people who hand their tags back in get some benefit i.e. slate wiped clear - same odds next year as this year ?

Jeesh wish they would do the same for elk on the Island. If you cant fill it give it back so someone else can.

Yes. I gave mine back last year. The tag went to the next person in line and my odds returned to normal.
