The second one is a new design...Turkish style, 45" strung, 40# @28" draw. What's special about this one is that top grade Ton Kin bamboo was used on this one. This bow is extremely fast but shoots very smoothly.

Hey Rollingrock , great concept of shorter recurves that are working pieces of art . Can you provide more detail on the bamboo used as I notice no nodes .
Cheers to Alex and You .....

Hi Ken

This is Tonkin bamboo, supposedly the best bamboo in this world. Some top grade fishing rods are made of this type of bamboo. Only three countries claim to produce this type of bamboo, Vietnam, Cambodia and China. But the real one can only be found in certain area in China. There is a bamboo dealer in Chilliwack who claims to carry these. We took a look at it...garbage. We know exactly where to find these bamboo, but we finally decided to purchase from a US dealer cuz it wasn't cost efficient to import small quantities.

But to use these bamboos to make limbs, it took Alex some creativity. He finally came up with a special way of laminating the raw bamboo material before it can be used on a bow. That's why you don't see any nodes. In certain ways the layer of bamboo acts like another piece of high grade fiberglass. But it takes more time to make a bamboo bow. LOL

Absolute beauties both of them. I'm actually thrilled that I found another bowyer close to home. I want a custom Mongolian for myself soon enough, something like 80#

Saw rollingrock's recurve last spring whike bear hunting. Definately a beautiful bow

Howard Hill made his bows out of bamboo, nodes and all with no problem. Fibreglass backing and facing makes the nodes irrelevant.

 A two-piece takedown was just born...53"...all bamboo. Prototype only for now, 200+ fps.

Not being a bowman I'll never own one of those bows but I can certainly appreciate the beautiful and craftsmanship in them. Absolute eye candy.

The recent short horn bows....no fiberglass, only Tonkin bamboo, one-piece water buffalo horns and sinew. Shoot really well..

Beautiful bows . what are the specs on them and is the flatbow a reflex/deflex design ? How does it compare to the siyahed bow ?

rollingrock
06-18-2015, 05:02 PM
All these ones are around 49" strung. Draw weight can be as high as 60 lbs with a draw between 26" to 30". The "flatbow" is an Assyrian bow, it's not exactly a reflex/deflex design. But close....It's different from siyahed bow, which is more Turkish. Alex used to shoot one of these made by himself. That thing was short (46") and fast. But it was a laminated fiberglass bow.

The all natural material bows are nice, but they are a little bit slower than the modern fiberglass laminated bows if in the same design. The animals however won't feel the difference.

Thanks for the info . What style of release do you and Alex use with those bows ?

Assyrian bow style is very interesting , very old ... and quite possibly more efficient than a lighter weight composite bow with siyahs which the experts say only outperform all wood bows once you start pulling heavier weight bows approximately 70# to make up for the weight of the siyahs mostly.

That a Turkish or Persian style composite is beautiful is reason enough to build and shoot them. I believe you that an all natural material composite bow is a little bit slower than of man-made materials but no one can deny that they feel better , a softer , quieter bow with a living spirit as it were . A fiberglass sandwiched bow is harsh in comparison .

Some interesting information here about composite bows in general and the Manchu bow in greater detail - http://www.manchuarchery.org/bows

I will be switching to thumb ring style soon to gain a couple of more inches of draw.
